Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Thursday, February 24, 2005

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.

Exclusive look at Bebo

">
Exclusive look at Bebo

Saturday, March 15, 2008

Wikinews spoke to the Global Communications Director at Bebo to have a look at the popular social networking site. Sarah Gavin spoke via email to Wikinews’ Gabriel Pollard exclusively.

Bebo – its full name being Blog Early Blog Often – started off life with its name being adopted from a suggestion a journalist made, as well as the memorable nature of the name. Ms Gavin said, “The reality is that the name was chosen for more practical reasons… it was memorable, translated well and most importantly it was available.”

Founded in 2005 by husband and wife team, Michael Birch and Xochi Birch, Bebo was an online community for Internet users to talk to one another online, write blog posts and generally post pictures. Now in 2008, “Bebo allows users to find and communicate with friends as well as discovering, experiencing and sharing professional and user-generated content including video, music, books and other forms of entertainment,” Ms Gavin said. 2005 was the year when at least another two social networking sites entered the market with Friendster and Ringo.com, which was set up by the same people who created Bebo. Ringo was later sold on to Monster.com.

Not only does Bebo facilitate the aforementioned activities on it’s site, but also has access to professional content produced by broadcasters, such as TVNZ in New Zealand, and producers. This is done through its Open Media platform which claims to have over 400 media partners signed up.

Ms Gavin said, “Bebo offers many of the same features found on other sites, but unlike most social networks that limit their scope to communications and utility platforms, Bebo has opened its doors to all media companies, bringing the richness of the media world to its fast-growing community of users.”

All of a sudden – and seemingly out of nowhere – the individual understands the power the web, and what opportunities instant, widespread communication, affords them. Everyone can create and shape the message.

Bebo even has its own television series it hosts on its website. KateModern, produced by those who made the popular Lonelygirl15 web-series, is a series exclusive to the Internet and was commissioned by Bebo in April, 2007. Bebo boasts that KateModern is the most popular television show on the Internet and saw it attain over 35 million views in the first season alone.

In early December 2007, Bebo announced its Open Application Platform, compatible with Facebook’s F8 and Google’s OpenSocial platforms. This new platform opens up its API so developers such as NBC Universal and Last.fm can build applications for use on Bebo. 1,300 applications have already been made for Bebo.

With over 40 million members internationally, Bebo has become the only “global Social Media Network” in existence today. Each month its demographic users aged between 16 and 24-years of age inclusive spend a combined total of 2.14 billion minutes a month surfing the highly popular site; or 40 minutes a day per user. The majority of its membership are from English-speaking nations such as United States, Australia and New Zealand where it experiences high popularity.

In the United Kingdom alone, Bebo has more than 11.4 million users, with 1.3 million located just in Ireland; 80% of Irish members are over 18-years-old. Ms Gavin spoke further on the popularity experienced in the world, “It is the number one social networking site in New Zealand, the number two site in Australia, and the number three site in the US and Canada.”

Bebo experiences a gender balance with a virtual “50:50” split between female and male users “in each territory”.

There is also a local version catered for the Polish community as well as there being plans to migrate into a local French and Spanish site.

Bebo also experiences higher usage than rival social networking site, MySpace, and video sharing website, YouTube, combined. “Bebo users are the most engaged and view an average of 92 pages per usage day,” Ms Gavin said.

Ms Gavin said, “Only 10 months after its inception, Bebo was voted Best Social Networking Web Site by more than 300,000 voters in the annual People’s Voice awards, in May 2006. Bebo won the People’s Choice award in the Social Networking category at the 2006 Webby awards and was named as the number one search term in the Year-End Google Zeitgeist 2006.”

We are shocked and saddened by the recent tragic events in Wales.

Recently it has emerged that youth in Wales have been committing suicide to gain attention, such as having a memorial page on the networking site. In response Bebo have set up their own service called “Be Well” to help make Bebo a “safe and secure environment.” Ms Gavin said, “We are actively working with mental health and social care organisations – including Samaritans – to provide support and advice for our members.

“Bebo recognizes the potential dangers of online and takes proactive measures to promote safe use of its network. Bebo works in collaboration with law enforcement agencies from across the globe… [and] features a ‘report abuse’ button on every page.”

The “Be Well” service has recently expanded its offerings to the Australian and New Zealand markets too.

When asked to comment on any possible offers to buy Bebo by such companies as Google, Ms Gavin said that it was against policy to comment on “rumour and speculation”. However, after the interview, it was revealed that Time Warner’s AOL Internet division is set to buy up Bebo for US$850 million.

The Vlc Media Player And The Introduction Of Its App

By Jason Bacot

The Iphone was the first phone that introduced the concept of applications, or apps as they are more commonly known, to the world. Apps were embraced excitedly by everyone because they were so incredibly useful and so many of them are immense fun to use. The Iphone also introduced the capability of consumers to watch huge, high quality videos on the phone itself, a feature that is wildly popular especially since this is the age of YouTube followers.

Then followed the Android phones with the same abilities and similar apps. Of course as all phone users know, if you combine the two, that is video playing and apps, then anyone can tell you that few players are available on the app market that can play every type of video that you want to see on your advanced phone. When you have such a technologically advanced mobile phone and you want to use it to its full potential, then a thing like a video file not working can really spoil everything especially if it was something that you were really looking forward to. It is in connection to this that we enter the world of the VLC media player.

The VLC media player is a universal media player that you can utilize to play almost any kind of file available out there. This includes obscure file formats like DivX, WMV and Avi. For the last few years the VLC media player has been downloaded off the internet onto laptops and computers for free by millions of people worldwide. With electronic devices like the Iphone, Ipad, Ipod and Android phones coursing the world like wild fire, the company behind the VLC, that is VideoLan, have now introduced an app for both the Iphone and the Android systems.

The app itself is also free and features pretty much the same characteristics that the actual software has. This means if you enable a VLC media player download on your mobile phone, then you can expect to benefit from a host of advantages. Whichever website you use to download an audio or video file no longer matters, what format it is based on no longer matters. If you have done a VLC player download, then you can rest assured that your file will open easily on your phone.

All encoded files on YouTube are supported by the VLC media player app as well, which is a huge plus. If you missed your favorite television show, that is no longer a problem either. Just go to the catch-up website of that television channel and click on your missed show. It will start playing and you can start enjoying.

With each new version of the VLC media player app, features keep getting better and better. Take the app designed for the Iphone. The latest version of the VLC app runs on the Iphone 4 without any problems and has a new added feature. This refers to the user’s ability to delete files from the app without having to go through Itunes anymore.

Culture of violence reported in central Australian Aboriginal communities

Culture of violence reported in central Australian Aboriginal communities

Wednesday, May 17, 2006

Australian media reports that a recently leaked Northern Territory police briefing paper exposes “shocking” cases of sexual abuse and violence against women and children in remote Australian Aboriginal communities.

Central Australian Crown prosecutor, Dr Nannette Rogers, alleged a range of “dreadful” cases she has heard of. Her paper claims details of abuse (over a 15-year period), including the rape of a seven-month-old baby, and the sexual assault and drowning of a girl by an 18-year-old man. The report refers to a disturbingly abusive and secretive Indigenous male culture. She says a “web of kinship” has helped to create a “conspiracy of silence” and that Aboriginal communities were suffering from “tragedy fatigue,” allowing horrific crimes to appear unremarkable.

“It doesn’t augur well for Aboriginal people to be functional human beings with the attributes of turning around and caring for children themselves,” she said. “The child grows up seeing violence done to him or her and having violence done to him or her.”

Tangentyere Council chief executive William Tilmouth says it is appalling behaviour. “It’s a behaviour that’s got to stop, it’s behaviour that denigrates the family, as well as the women,” he said.

Darcy Richardson to seek Reform Party presidential nomination

">
Darcy Richardson to seek Reform Party presidential nomination

Friday, June 15, 2012

Darcy Richardson, the historian who challenged U.S. President Barack Obama in several 2012 Democratic Party primary races, has notified Wikinews he will now “actively seek” the presidential nominations of the Reform Party of the United States of America and several third parties with single-state ballot access.

Richardson initially ran as a progressive alternative to Obama, concerned largely with the president’s economic policies. Discussing his qualms in detail during a November 2011 Wikinews interview, Richardson cited Obama’s extension of the Bush tax cuts, his inability to include a public option in his health care bill, his failure to renew the Glass-Steagall Act and pass cap-and-trade legislation, and his seeming reluctance to defend Social Security and Medicare. He also mentioned Obama’s continued use of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp and prosecution of the War in Afghanistan.

As a Democrat, Richardson qualified for primary ballots in New Hampshire, Missouri, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Texas. His strongest showing proportionally came in Oklahoma, where he won 6.36 percent of the vote. Overall he received a total of 41,386 votes in the five states, 25,296 of which came during the May 29 Texas primary, after he had already suspended his campaign.

Last April, Richardson ceased all campaign operations, and shifted focus to his news blog Uncovered Politics. At the time, he said he planned to support Americans Elect and Reform Party presidential candidate Buddy Roemer, in part due to his economic plans, such as the reinstatement of Glass-Steagall. Richardson described Roemer as a “straight-talking, anti-Wall Street former governor of Louisiana who is … head and shoulders above any other potential third-party candidate in his conception of the current economic crisis.”

After Roemer ended his presidential campaign as a whole following Americans Elect’s board decision to not nominate a 2012 ticket, Richardson was left to decide whether to support Obama’s re-election or reconsider his own campaign. He ultimately chose to relaunch his campaign, and like Roemer, run for Reform Party nomination. He concluded:

I can’t in good conscience support President Obama’s re-election. He’s a good man, but entirely out of his league in putting the country on a path to economic recovery. The American people are hurting, and they’re hurting badly. President Obama squandered the first two years of his presidency on a health care bill that nobody wanted while essentially ignoring the private sector in his $787 billion stimulus package in 2009 — legislation that did little other than preserve the bloated payrolls of public sector employees across the country. We need a President who understands what it will take to end this depression, somebody with extensive private sector experience. Unlike President Obama, I have spent my entire life in the business community.

Currently, six other individuals are seeking the Reform Party presidential nomination: Blake Ashby, who challenged President Bush in the 2004 Republican primaries; fitness model Andre Barnett, the only candidate remaining who participated in the January 2012 Wikinews Reform Party forum; Dow Chemical worker Edward Chlapowski; consultant Kenneth Cross; economic adviser Dick McCormick; and estimator Michael Edwin Whitley.

The Reform Party currently has ballot access in four states, but with the aim of achieving access in a dozen, Richardson will also compete for the nominations of ballot-qualified third parties with single-state access elsewhere.

What To Do When They Cheated On You?

Submitted by: Raeza Rolluqui

Cheating is one of the greatest fears when someone is in a relationship. Every person fears the fact they their partners might someday cheat on them. The couples that never went through this road are very lucky, but let s be honest and say that most couples underwent such stages. So the main question for those who are currently experiencing this crucial stage is: What should I do now?

There are a lot of situations for every different couple when it comes to cheating. Let s starting with the mildest one He or She Cheated Once :

* When your partner cheated on you, expect that s/he will never admit it at first encounter. Trust me that he will go to any means just to avoid the confrontation. You might not get a hold of him/her for a couple of days, but be persistent. If you want an answer with your suspicion, cling to him. Never stop until s/he finally gives in. Now, if you got your answer and if it s a YES , stop the communication at the very moment.

* With the confirmation in your head, this will be the stage where depression would eat you up. You need to cry, baby. Being cheated with will give you one of the greatest pain you will ever receive. So don t hesitate to cry, it will lessen the burden inside your chest. Though people will tell you to stop, don t listen to them, only you will know whether you ve already cried enough or not. Give yourself the time to mourn for the trust that died away.

* As it s the first time that your partner cheated on you, you should give time to talk it all out. Once you got over the crying jag, you ll be able to face him/her again, and expect anger to be with you. When you finally get to talk, the first question should be: WHY? Listen to him and never interrupt. Let him mumble, murmur and rant about his/her far-fetched reason. Reasons will come differently for each couple, so if you re satisfied with your partner s reason, ask yourself if you will accept it.

* Forgive. I know it is not fair and I know it s easier said than done, but God told us to forgive, like the way He had forgiven our sins. Lack of forgiveness will lead people to their destruction, so be open to forgiving your partner. You can do it slowly, but let it be surely. If he/she asked you back, it will be entirely up to you to trust your partner again. The decisions will all be up to you, and no one can tell you what to do. The purpose of this article is that you can have a guide, a little help, when there seemed to be helplessness for the situation. Think and rethink whether to give a chance or never again. But always forgive, it is every essential.

So what should you do when the Cheating Was Done Not Once, But Twice? :

* In my own honest opinion, once your partner cheated on you again and again, there s no rational reason to accept him/her (this doesn t apply to married couples) once more. S/He is making you an idiot right in front of your face, so let it go. Fixation might eat you up, or the phrases What about the years we had? will haunt you, but baby listen to this: THIS IS GOING NOWHERE. There will be a lot of people out there meant for you, never to hurt you but to cherish and love you forever and ever. Stop enduring and learn to love yourself first. Don t listen to sad music, don t stare at your photos take him/her away from your sight and your life to forget about him. If he/she truly loves you, why would he/she love another one again? Be logical and not overly emotional, you ll only run around the cycle again and again. But never forget to forgive, okay? Forgive him/her and move on. Live your life and take chances again life is full of chances for you to take, it s just waiting there around the corner so go ahead and find it!

For married couples:

* I would never suggest divorce. Please be responsible with the decision you did and trouble you made. If you can’t stand each other, give space, but never separate entirely. For the cheater, do what you need to do in order to prove that you are trustworthy again, and never do it as you would promise. And for the person who got cheated with, give your spouse a chance and think of your family. Talk and learn how to trust again, pray to the Lord and He will always answer you. Rebuild your family and never mention mistakes or sins (even cheating) again if ever you will get into arguments or fights. Never look back and move on forward.

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Edmund White on writing, incest, life and Larry Kramer

Thursday, November 8, 2007

What you are about to read is an American life as lived by renowned author Edmund White. His life has been a crossroads, the fulcrum of high-brow Classicism and low-brow Brett Easton Ellisism. It is not for the faint. He has been the toast of the literary elite in New York, London and Paris, befriending artistic luminaries such as Salman Rushdie and Sir Ian McKellen while writing about a family where he was jealous his sister was having sex with his father as he fought off his mother’s amorous pursuit.

The fact is, Edmund White exists. His life exists. To the casual reader, they may find it disquieting that someone like his father existed in 1950’s America and that White’s work is the progeny of his intimate effort to understand his own experience.

Wikinews reporter David Shankbone understood that an interview with Edmund White, who is professor of creative writing at Princeton University, who wrote the seminal biography of Jean Genet, and who no longer can keep track of how many sex partners he has encountered, meant nothing would be off limits. Nothing was. Late in the interview they were joined by his partner Michael Caroll, who discussed White’s enduring feud with influential writer and activist Larry Kramer.
