Time Warner, Sprint close to mobile pact

Wednesday, December 29, 2004

New YorkTime Warner Cable is close to a deal with Sprint Corp. to offer mobile telephone service under the TimeWarner brand to the cabler’s 11 million subscribers, according to a report in Wednesday’s The Wall Street Journal.

If such a deal is struck, Time Warner will be the first cable company to offer the so-called “quadruple threat” in telecommunications, by offering voice, video, internet and mobile services in a single package.

The Journal reported that Time Warner would test market the new mobile service in Kansas City before the end of March.

Any such deal could strengthen Time Warner’s plans to expand its entry into the telephony market. The company said it expects to have 200 thousand voice customers when it closes its 2004 books Friday. As of mid-December, the company said it was adding about 10 thousand new wired voice customers per week.

For voice customers Time Warner is competing with regional telephone monopolies Verizon, SBC and BellSouth, which among them control the two largest mobile networks in the United States: Verizon and Cingular.

Greek lawmakers approve contentious campus police legislation

Greek lawmakers approve contentious campus police legislation

Saturday, February 13, 2021

The Greek Parliament passed contentious legislation on Thursday allowing for the creation of a campus police force and disciplinary council to end the tradition of violence at Greek universities. The decision, passed 166–132 in a parliament of 300, was opposed by many students and professors, who claim it would stifle freedom of expression.

Changes proposed included establishment of a campus police division, restriction of entry into university grounds, and formation of a “disciplinary council” empowered to suspend or expel students.

A Ministry for Citizen Protection spokesperson called university campus violence “timeless”; and said “[t]he police will drive out extremist political groups and guard the infrastructure, finally making the university a safe place”.

Prior to the vote, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, leader of the centre-right New Democracy political party which first introduced the legislation, told lawmakers “[n]owhere in the world do we see images […] of historical buildings being vandalised”.

Many incidents of unrest have occurred at Greek universities, including a 1973 student revolt at Athens Polytechnic against the 1967–1974 military junta. The government forcefully repressed the uprising, resulting in the death of at least 26. Due to another protest in 1990–91 against high school reform pushed by Mitsotakis’ father Konstantinos, one teacher died. In October, a rector was taken hostage by hooded anarchists.

In 2019, the government repealed a restriction in place since 1982 that had effectively prevented police from entering university grounds.Opponents of the introduction of police at universities have described it as stifling freedom of expression, which the government claimed is “ridiculous”. At recent demonstrations, protestors have chanted “Bread, education and freedom”, a common anti-junta slogan of the 1973 uprising. In January, Athenian police used tear gas to break up a protest which was defying lockdown restrictions.

Many Greek professors have also opposed the idea, with Professor of State Theory and Law at Panteion University Dimitris Kaltsonis claiming, in remarks to Euronews, “there is no need for special police to control the campuses”. Oxford University’s University and College Union (UCU) stated on Twitter “its solidarity to Greek colleagues […] opposing the creation of such a special university police force, which is unlikely to respond to the most pertinent problems of Greek higher education institutions”, and that the then-proposal was “alarming and not in line with best practice.”

Some recent demonstrators have called for “more doctors, fewer police”. Eurostat data from 2016–2018, which a spokesperson for the Ministry for Citizen Protection called “inaccurate”, showed Greece had the second most police officers per capita of any country in the European Union. The spokesperson said the government is “investing in the quality of education as well”, but emphasised “[p]olice on campuses is not a choice, but a necessary move”.

€23 million was recently budgeted for Greek law enforcement to better “face contemporary challenges, such as COVID-19 and external threats”.

Left-wing opposition party Syriza has criticised the legislation as an attempt to make universities “sterile and unfree”.

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Cleveland, Ohio clinic performs US’s first face transplant

Thursday, December 18, 2008

A team of eight transplant surgeons in Cleveland Clinic in Ohio, USA, led by reconstructive surgeon Dr. Maria Siemionow, age 58, have successfully performed the first almost total face transplant in the US, and the fourth globally, on a woman so horribly disfigured due to trauma, that cost her an eye. Two weeks ago Dr. Siemionow, in a 23-hour marathon surgery, replaced 80 percent of her face, by transplanting or grafting bone, nerve, blood vessels, muscles and skin harvested from a female donor’s cadaver.

The Clinic surgeons, in Wednesday’s news conference, described the details of the transplant but upon request, the team did not publish her name, age and cause of injury nor the donor’s identity. The patient’s family desired the reason for her transplant to remain confidential. The Los Angeles Times reported that the patient “had no upper jaw, nose, cheeks or lower eyelids and was unable to eat, talk, smile, smell or breathe on her own.” The clinic’s dermatology and plastic surgery chair, Francis Papay, described the nine hours phase of the procedure: “We transferred the skin, all the facial muscles in the upper face and mid-face, the upper lip, all of the nose, most of the sinuses around the nose, the upper jaw including the teeth, the facial nerve.” Thereafter, another team spent three hours sewing the woman’s blood vessels to that of the donor’s face to restore blood circulation, making the graft a success.

The New York Times reported that “three partial face transplants have been performed since 2005, two in France and one in China, all using facial tissue from a dead donor with permission from their families.” “Only the forehead, upper eyelids, lower lip, lower teeth and jaw are hers, the rest of her face comes from a cadaver; she could not eat on her own or breathe without a hole in her windpipe. About 77 square inches of tissue were transplanted from the donor,” it further described the details of the medical marvel. The patient, however, must take lifetime immunosuppressive drugs, also called antirejection drugs, which do not guarantee success. The transplant team said that in case of failure, it would replace the part with a skin graft taken from her own body.

Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a Brigham and Women’s Hospital surgeon praised the recent medical development. “There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Leading bioethicist Arthur Caplan of the University of Pennsylvania withheld judgment on the Cleveland transplant amid grave concerns on the post-operation results. “The biggest ethical problem is dealing with failure — if your face rejects. It would be a living hell. If your face is falling off and you can’t eat and you can’t breathe and you’re suffering in a terrible manner that can’t be reversed, you need to put on the table assistance in dying. There are patients who can benefit tremendously from this. It’s great that it happened,” he said.

Dr Alex Clarke, of the Royal Free Hospital had praised the Clinic for its contribution to medicine. “It is a real step forward for people who have severe disfigurement and this operation has been done by a team who have really prepared and worked towards this for a number of years. These transplants have proven that the technical difficulties can be overcome and psychologically the patients are doing well. They have all have reacted positively and have begun to do things they were not able to before. All the things people thought were barriers to this kind of operations have been overcome,” she said.

The first partial face transplant surgery on a living human was performed on Isabelle Dinoire on November 27 2005, when she was 38, by Professor Bernard Devauchelle, assisted by Professor Jean-Michel Dubernard in Amiens, France. Her Labrador dog mauled her in May 2005. A triangle of face tissue including the nose and mouth was taken from a brain-dead female donor and grafted onto the patient. Scientists elsewhere have performed scalp and ear transplants. However, the claim is the first for a mouth and nose transplant. Experts say the mouth and nose are the most difficult parts of the face to transplant.

In 2004, the same Cleveland Clinic, became the first institution to approve this surgery and test it on cadavers. In October 2006, surgeon Peter Butler at London‘s Royal Free Hospital in the UK was given permission by the NHS ethics board to carry out a full face transplant. His team will select four adult patients (children cannot be selected due to concerns over consent), with operations being carried out at six month intervals. In March 2008, the treatment of 30-year-old neurofibromatosis victim Pascal Coler of France ended after having received what his doctors call the worlds first successful full face transplant.

Ethical concerns, psychological impact, problems relating to immunosuppression and consequences of technical failure have prevented teams from performing face transplant operations in the past, even though it has been technically possible to carry out such procedures for years.

Mr Iain Hutchison, of Barts and the London Hospital, warned of several problems with face transplants, such as blood vessels in the donated tissue clotting and immunosuppressants failing or increasing the patient’s risk of cancer. He also pointed out ethical issues with the fact that the procedure requires a “beating heart donor”. The transplant is carried out while the donor is brain dead, but still alive by use of a ventilator.

According to Stephen Wigmore, chair of British Transplantation Society’s ethics committee, it is unknown to what extent facial expressions will function in the long term. He said that it is not certain whether a patient could be left worse off in the case of a face transplant failing.

Mr Michael Earley, a member of the Royal College of Surgeon‘s facial transplantation working party, commented that if successful, the transplant would be “a major breakthrough in facial reconstruction” and “a major step forward for the facially disfigured.”

In Wednesday’s conference, Siemionow said “we know that there are so many patients there in their homes where they are hiding from society because they are afraid to walk to the grocery stores, they are afraid to go the the street.” “Our patient was called names and was humiliated. We very much hope that for this very special group of patients there is a hope that someday they will be able to go comfortably from their houses and enjoy the things we take for granted,” she added.

In response to the medical breakthrough, a British medical group led by Royal Free Hospital’s lead surgeon Dr Peter Butler, said they will finish the world’s first full face transplant within a year. “We hope to make an announcement about a full-face operation in the next 12 months. This latest operation shows how facial transplantation can help a particular group of the most severely facially injured people. These are people who would otherwise live a terrible twilight life, shut away from public gaze,” he said.

U.S. watchdog group lists “most corrupt members of Congress”

U.S. watchdog group lists “most corrupt members of Congress”

Friday, October 7, 2005

Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) [1], a U.S. legislative watchdog group, has released a report attempting to document the unethical and illegal activities of who they are calling the “most tainted members of Congress”. In describing the reasons for the report Melanie Sloan, executive director of CREW said, “[CREW] was compelled to research and release a report on these corrupt members because the ethics committees in both the House and Senate are completely inert. The report calls for the House and Senate to act to investigate and take appropriate action against them for these violations of the rules.” She went on to attack both parties regarding ethics, “Democrats are just as much to blame as Republicans for the current ethics deadlock. The Democrats won’t file ethics complaints against even the most egregious violators like DeLay and Ney…. The Democrats are spineless.”

The report covers possible violations of federal laws, as well as congressional ethics rules. To compile the report, CREW drew upon Federal Election Commission (FEC) reports and audits, sworn testimony, emails, and personal financial and travel disclosure forms. By analyzing that information, CREW then attempted to determine if the member’s activities violated federal laws, regulations, or congressional ethics rules. The 13 members of Congress covered are:

The report is entitled “Beyond DeLay: The 13 Most Corrupt Members of Congress”, seeking to capitalize on the current media attention on ethics that has come about due to the indictments of former House Majority Leader Tom DeLay. However, the report does not cover any of Tom Delay’s ethics problems, nor does it have any information on his current legal problems.

The report was criticized by the office of Rick Renzi, one of the congressmen listed, arguing that CREW are biased and pursuing a political agenda. “This group is run by one of the biggest Democratic Party donors in the nation and is a mouthpiece for its fierce political attacks,” said Renzi’s office in a statement. “The group’s biased accusations show the campaign season is starting early.”

Representative Burns, also one of the representatives named in the report, responded through spokesman James Pendleton calling CREW’s report “pure politics.” The press secretary for Representative Bob Ney, also named in the CREW report, said, “We don’t give Melanie Sloan and her liberal organization an ounce of credibility.”

Both Members of the House whose residences have been searched as part of a criminal investigation, Cunningham and Jefferson, are included on the list. Burns, Ney, and Feeney are cited for their dealings with lobbyist Jack Abramoff. 11 out of the 13 named representatives are Republicans.

US food regulators recall 380 million eggs after salmonella outbreak

US food regulators recall 380 million eggs after salmonella outbreak

Friday, August 20, 2010

The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recalled 380 million eggs and the number is expected to grow, after around 300 in Colorado, California, and Minnesota and 2,000 nationwide became infected with salmonella after eating eggs distributed by Wright County Eggs.

The contaminated eggs were sold under the labels Lucerne, Albertson, Mountain Dairy, Ralph’s, Boomsma’s, Sunshine, Hillandale, Trafficanda, Farm Fresh, Shoreland, Lund, Dutch Farms, Kemps, Bayview, Mountain Dairy, NuLay and Sun Valley. Eggs have been sold in seventeen states.

Wright County Egg’s owner has been previously cited for breaking environmental laws.

They [birds] defecate in the feed, which the chickens then eat and can become infected.

In response to the outbreak the FDA deployed an initial team of ten investigators to Wright County Egg in Iowa to inspect the farms and determine the source of the contamination. Although no official statement has been issued, it is believed animals including birds and rodents defecated where food for chickens is stored.

The outbreak is believed to have started in early July, around the time new federal regulations to prevent salmonella contamination of eggs took effect.

According to the FDA, the symptoms of salmonella infection includes fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain.

Why Horizontal Drilling Results In A Lucrative Texas Oil Investment

Why Horizontal Drilling Results in a Lucrative Texas Oil Investment

by

Trey Christian

“Can investing in a more costly form of drilling mean better returns? Yes, if drilling for oil is performed utilizing horizontal drilling. Oil drilling technology has advanced a tremendous amount over the last quarter of a century. And while some people talk of the long-lost good ole days of oil drilling in Texas, Texas oil investment is still a possibility with horizontal drilling.

Enhanced Oil Recovery Paves Way to Future Extraction Methods

With rising prices for each barrel of oil, oil and gas investing is becoming more and more appealing. Especially with the newer enhanced oil recovery (EOR) systems in place that were not available even a decade ago.

EOR is an improved oil recovery system that uses techniques aimed at extracting more oil from a reservoir that cannot be achieved by direct drilling. One of those techniques is horizontal drilling, which can extract up to 60% or more of an oil reservoir, compare to only 20%-40% using traditional vertical drilling.

Now your Texas oil investment can reap big rewards with a company that practices horizontal drilling. Horizontal drilling uses coil tubing rather than 30-foot sections of steel pipe used on traditional wells. The coil tubing allows the drilling angle to be much more flexible, even drilling at angles of 90 degrees to 95 degrees. And rather than spinning the steel tubing to turn the drill, coil tubing techniques send high-pressure drilling mud through the tube which in turn triggers a pressure-sensitive hydraulic motor that rotates the drill bit.

It’s Not Just Where you Drill – The Angle Can be Critical

Controlling the angle at which the drill bores into oil reserves is the key. Direct vertical drilling greatly reduces the exposure to the oil reservoir. Crude oil tends to accumulate within pockets of layered rock, usually sandstone. And because crude oil moves extremely slowly a direct tap from a vertical drill tends to produce low tap.

However, since horizontal drilling allows can access a crude oil reserve from the side, the total exposure to the entire reservoir is greatly increased, resulting in much more and faster oil recovery. In addition, horizontal drilling can access more than one pocket of crude oil. That means instead of drilling multiple vertical wells, only two or three horizontal wells may be needed to tap an entire oil field.

In addition, natural gas can now be collected from crude oil drilling using a process that converts the gas into a liquid state. Where once natural gas was burned off from crude oil production wells, it can now be harnessed and turned into a usable product.

Texas oil investing is at a new milestone. It is now possible to tap into wells that were once unreachable, and extract more crude oil than ever possible. If you are interested in oil and gas investing, now is the time to look into what could be a very profitable venture. Be sure you analyze the risks and benefits of oil and gas investing, and find a reputable oil company to invest in that meets your investing objectives.”

Australian state of Queensland will go to the polls on March 21

">
Australian state of Queensland will go to the polls on March 21

Thursday, February 26, 2009

The Premier of the Australian state of Queensland has announced that the state will have its election on Saturday, March 21. In an address on YouTube, Anna Bligh of the Australian Labor Party said that she called the election due to the state of the economy and to stabilise the government.

“It’s time for Queensland to settle this election. It’s time to settle the speculation. So that government, business and the community can get on with the task at hand and not be distracted and destabilised by looming elections,” Ms Bligh said in the statement.

Ms Bligh has recently denied that she would call an early election.

“I have always said that I want my government to run the full term and I have not changed my view on this lightly,” she said.

“After 11 years in office, Ms Bligh only cares about one job: her own,” said Lawrence Springborg head of the Liberal National Party (LNP) and the Leader of the Opposition. “Queensland deserves better. Over the next 27 days, the LNP will build on our vision for the Queensland we all deserve.”

The Opposition need to pick up at least twenty seats from the government to overcome the significant Labor majority and a number of independents.

“It is a sad legacy of economic management and mismanagement of the Labor Government that after 11 years of the rivers of gold, our state is broke,” Mr Springborg said. “It’s a little bit like lighting a fire and then running around and wanting credit for putting it out.”

A March 21 election gives candidates twenty six day to campaign. This is just within the legal requirements. The Queensland Electoral Act (1992) requires the election campaign to last between 26 and 56 days.

The Queensland Greens nominated an environmental lawyer to run against treasurer Andrew Fraser.

“We can tackle climate change and create long-term jobs, but Labor can’t see that because they are blinded by the interests of their big donors – the urban development and coal industries,” says Larrisa Waters, the Greens candidate for Mt-Cootha.

“The Greens want to give the community and the environment a voice back in State Parliament.”

“The current stance taken by both major parties, in relation to Daylight Saving in Queensland, is outdated, out of touch and inflexible. South East Queenslanders are frustrated that neither major party is currently prepared to explore options on the issue of Daylight Saving”, DS4SEQ party leader Jason Furze told Wikinews on January 30. DS4SEQ is a single-issue party, focused on the debate on daylight saving time.

Indigenous activist Sam Watson will be contesting the South Brisbane electorate which is currently held by the premier. He will represent the Socialist Alliance. Watson campaigned heavly for indigenous rights since the 1970s and was a community spokesperson following the death of Mulrunji Doomadgee in 2004.
