Law center helps defend open source

Wednesday, February 2, 2005

Eben Moglen, Columbia University Law Professor, will head the newSoftware Freedom Law Center (SFLC). An initial 4 million dollars has been provided by Open Source Development Labs (OSDL) to fund the project.

The law center will provide free legal service for open source projects and developers. In 2004 OSDL established a separate $10 million Linux Legal Defense Fund providing legal support for Linus Torvalds, Linux kernel creator and end user companies subjected to Linux-related litigation by the SCO Group. The new law center will not be affiliated with the OSDL.

“This is about taking care of the goose that laid the golden egg and not letting wolves come in the middle of the night and steal it away,” Moglen said during a press conference. “This is a legal firm not involved so much in litigating and defending as it will be for counseling and advising and nurturing non-profits and to prevent millions of dollars in litigation.”

Moglen will serve as chairman and director-counsel of the non-profit organization. Also on board as directors are: Lawrence Lessig, law professor at Stanford Law School; Daniel Weitzner, director of the World Wide Web Consortium‘s technology and society activities; and Diane Peters, general counsel at the OSDL. Daniel Ravicher, executive director of the Public Patent Foundation, will help manage as legal director.

Moglen, one of the world.s leading experts on copyright law as applied to software, will run the new Law Center from its headquarters in New York City. The Law Center will initially have two full-time intellectual property attorneys on staff and expects to expand to four attorneys later this year. Initial clients for the Law Center include the Free Software Foundation and the Samba Project.

Other services provided by the SFLC include: asset stewardship, to avoid intellectual property claim conflict; license review and compatibility analysis; legal consulting and lawyer training.

Feeding Puppies, Puppy Deworming And Health Care For Your Dog

Feeding Puppies, Puppy Deworming and Health Care for your Dog

by

Julia Bennet

As the holidays approach children make numerous requests to their parents for a puppy for Christmas and many of them oblige though not really having any idea of the care and responsibility involved. One of the perhaps easiest and common mistakes made in the care for puppies involves puppy de-worming and feeding puppies.

Feeding the newest edition in the family might seem easier than you think, as they appear to be great eating machines but feeding puppies people (via table) food is the worst thing you can do for your little companion. Puppies are like human babies, they have specific nutritional needs that can t be met with our food. Also considering that a lot of our food is highly processed making even more unsuitable for dogs. Also consider that certain foods, like chocolate, can make them very sick if not kill your puppy. There are numerous pet food products on the market that provides the proper nutritional feeding puppies. And just like us humans, portioning and frequency can create havoc on the newest member of the family. Puppies can grow into adult dogs that have become overweight; develop premature arthritis and joint problems; and even heart disease. Most puppies can get away with eating three times a day, just like us. Adult dogs, depending upon activity level, can get away with two meals a day. But this isn t the only thing that can affect your newest family member. Various worms can affect the absorption of nutrients for their health and well being.

There are several worm varieties as well as parasites that can be transmitted from mother to offspring or acquired at any point thru infected grasses the dog comes in contact with. Some of these parasites develop into worms that not only feed on what the animal has ingested but also will feed on their organs, getting healthy at the expense of their host. Worms like the Whipworm, Hookworms, as well as the more commonly known Tapeworm and Roundworms (which can be a few feet long) work their way out past the intestines, into the bloodstreams and headed to other critical organs in the body eventually leading to death. Because portions of these worms maybe seen outside of the dog s body, it does not mean that they are completely gone. They are able to regenerate provided the head is still intact. Protozoan parasites like the Giardia and Coccidia which are single celled organisms can cause as much damage as the worms.

Although most breeders and pet stores make every attempt to provide the best of medical care for all the puppies in their care including de-worming, there is always a chance of them still having these parasites. Of course, there is no guarantee of this from puppy mills or private parties. Animal shelters, such as the Humane Society checks for and treats puppies and older dogs for worms. A simple procedure is used to check and treat for these parasites. As part of the annual vet visit, a check for any worms or parasites should be performed on your puppy or adult dog. This will pay off in the long run for the health of your companion.

The puppy place is your source for your health care questions. Remember your new puppy relies on you for its feeding and de-worming health care needs.

Athletes prepare for 2012 Summer Paralympics at the Paralympic Fitness Centre

Monday, August 27, 2012

London, England — As Paralympians ready for the Games which are set to open later this week, they have access to a world class fitness center inside the Paralympic Village which is designed to maximise their pre-Game preparations.

According to volunteers staffing the center, instead of being a single large room, as in Beijing, the building has numerous rooms. It, along with the adjacent Village Services Centre, is designed to be converted into a school after the games conclude. Rooms have been structured as a gym, an auditorium, and science laboratories.

Gym equipment is supplied by Technogym, an Italian firm that has supplied gym equipment for the Olympics since 2000. Equipment has been provided not just for for the Fitness Centre, but for gyms at all the Olympic venues. The newest equipment is oriented toward maximum flexibility, allowing athletes to exercise the particular muscles that they most require for their sport.

In addition to the equipment, the Fitness Centre also provides instructors trained in the use of the equipment, the likes of which athletes from many countries have never seen before. There are also a number of instructors available to provide motivational training.

Car plows into crowd during Dutch Queen’s Day celebrations

Car plows into crowd during Dutch Queen’s Day celebrations

Thursday, April 30, 2009

Five people have died and at least 13 are injured after a car plowed into a crowd in front of Het Loo Palace in Apeldoorn, the Netherlands during celebrations of Queen’s Day. At around 11:50 local time a black Suzuki Swift went through barriers erected to separate the onlooking crowd from traffic, subsequently striking a monument. Members of the Dutch royal family watched the incident take place from the open-topped bus. The incident was witnessed by many onlookers and photographers as well by media covering the pageant.

“He came out of nowhere and dragged ten to fifteen people. There is blood everywhere and people being resuscitated,” a photographer following the parade for De Telegraaf said.

At around 12:00, all official activities in Apeldoorn were cancelled. Other Dutch cities have also cancelled or scaled back activities, such as the Radio 538 concert in Amsterdam and all celebrations in Rotterdam. The mayor of Apeldoorn stated that, “A good day has ended as a drama.” Offical Flags throughout the Netherlands have been placed at half-mast. The Queen responded in a video speech and expressed her sympathy for the victims.

During a press conference held at 15:45, police reported that the man, who was still conscious but heavily injured after the accident, had told police that it was a deliberate act. It was also reported that the 38-year-old, a Dutch national, had not been in contact with the police until earlier that day when he was stopped at one of the barriers. He has no prior history of psychological problems and there are no indications that any sort of terrorist group was involved.

The Queen’s Day celebrations, observing the birthday of the Dutch monarch, take place annually on April 30. Citizens of the country traditionally celebrate by holding late-night markets and decorating the streets of the Netherlands in orange bunting, honoring the House of Orange.

Move Your Super By Jamie Mc Intyre

By JamieMcIntyre

Australians have way too much of their superannuation tied up in the share market, and theyre following the unsound investment advice of buy and hold spruiked by financial sales people oops, sorry, financial planners.

This flawed strategy wiped out many baby boomers in the first Global Credit Crisis and its about to happen again.

Interestingly, Australians with more of their super in real estate have fared much better.

Australians simply have too much super weighted in shares.

Personally Im reallocating more of my super away from equities and into the following:

Australian land

Land appreciates faster than houses. Its a much safer, more secure investment (especially if you dont have to pay for it for a decade).

Plus by not having to pay for it for 7 to 12 years (by utilizing options) and then building a house on the land if you wish, this type of investing is a perfect way to hide from the financial storm thats coming.

Think about it. Theres no need to borrow money or pay holding costs, which can send you broke. Its leverage without the borrowing risks. And that means you can wait as long as you want.

Patience is a virtueand makes you rich when you have no borrowing costs.

US Property

Ive talked about this before however in a worse case scenario of the US economy going into a 10 year Japanese-like recession, US property will still be a phenomenal investment.

Listen; dont let the global uncertainty confuse you into thinking that the US property market shouldnt be exploited as much as possible especially whenever our dollar is above parity.

Being able to buy at rock bottom prices now (i.e. houses that were $250,000 for $80,000) with high rental returns will ensure most houses are paid off in 5 to 7 years.

And did you know rents are expected to rise further? Its true; the high amount of foreclosures is pushing former owners to become renters.

Plus many of those former owners are happy to rent their house back and agree to rebuy from you later at a healthy profit.

Why would they want to do that? Its simple. They can still get their house back at fraction of what they paid for it. And in truth, theyre very grateful to have a second chance.

Many of these houses, even in a recession, will recover back towards at least replacement value when surplus US housing stock runs out.

But even if it somehow didntyou dont need capital growth in US Property to make a small (or large) fortune.

What about further price drops?

Its possible, but buying houses at $80,000 that were $250,000 in 2008Im more than comfortable that any price drop will be minimal.

Actually in some areas small price rises have occurred as foreign investors compete for bargains.

Rural Land

I saw the Asian Food Crisis coming 5 years ago. Now I see soft commodities booming even more and I predict Australian rural prices will boom in coming years.

Actually, heres something interesting: small farmland in the US has boomed in recent years while residential real estate has crumbled.

What About The Stock Market?

For some months now Ive been saying, hold back, because better buying opportunities will come up.

Now were starting to see some good buying opportunities. And you know what? There will be even better ones coming.

Be prepared to take advantage of the market, but dont be overweighted in equities. It will be volatile.

(Those who know how to insure shares and make money when the market drops would be having a field day recently!)

Forex & Eminis

The Australian dollar has been in a good pattern. Up to $1.10 then retracting 5 to 10 cents, then rising again.

Forex trading is only for the educated though. The same with Eminis.

If financially educated, these can be great boosters to your portfolio. But they shouldnt be your portfolio.

To be nicely balanced, Id have these more speculative strategies backed up with lower risk type strategies such as land and houses.

Gold and silver

10 years ago I told 21st Century Members to buy gold when it was around $200 an ounce.

I explained in my book What I Didnt Learn At School But Wish I Had, Americas debt based Federal Reserve System would crumble because they cant just keep printing money with no reserves.

I bet my members wish theyd bought more gold now

Id still buy gold and silver, even now. Mainly as a hedge, not so much as an investment even though theres still immense profit potential available.

In fact Im trying to go one better and trade some assets for a nice slice of a silver mine ASX listed company to dig it up rather than just buy it.

Renting shares and selling insurance

These cash-flow type strategies can be very effective. The key is doing it over quality assets that have long-term inherent value.

For example: using the Warren Buffett stock selection criteria I modelled off arguably the worlds greatest investor.

Leave this part out of the recipe and youre messing with the strategy.

Remember crisis is opportunity.

Now is the time to be increasing your financial education, to take advantage of the volatile times heading our way.

Panic or profit. Everyone has a choice.

5-year-old girl handcuffed by Florida police

5-year-old girl handcuffed by Florida police

Sunday, April 24, 2005

St. Petersburg, Florida police were taped on video handcuffing a five-year-old kindergarten student who had earlier torn papers off a bulletin board and punched an assistant principal. The camera happened to be filming on March 14 as part of a classroom self-improvement exercise at Fairmount Park Elementary. Video of the event has been released by a lawyer for the child’s mother.

The little girl had already calmed down from her tantrum by the time of arrival of the police, but they cuffed her anyway. Police had been called when a phone call to mother Inga Akins, had led teachers to believe that it would take an hour for Ms Akins to arrive and take the girl away.

The video reportedly shows three officers pin the passive girl’s arms behind her back and put on handcuffs, as she screams, “No!”

Attorney for the mother, John Trevena, called the incident “incomprehensible”. He provided the tape to the media this week, after obtaining it from police.

“The image itself will be seared into people’s minds when you have three police officers bending a child over a table and forcibly handcuffing her,” said Mr Trevena.

Police planned to investigate the incident and make public the findings in around two weeks.

Labour politician Tony Benn dies aged 88

Labour politician Tony Benn dies aged 88

Friday, March 14, 2014

Tony Benn, British Labour Party politician and left-wing campaigner, died this morning at his home in west London at age 88. Benn’s health had been declining since a stroke left him hospitalized in 2012.

Benn’s father and both grandfathers were MPs (Members of Parliament) in the Liberal party; his father defected to Labour and became a Cabinet Minister. Benn grew up in London and was a pupil at Westminster School before studying politics, philosophy and economics at New College, Oxford. During World War II, he served in the Royal Air Force for two years, then went back to Oxford to finish his studies. He worked as a BBC radio producer.

Tony Benn became an MP in November of 1950 and was a member of the cabinets of Harold Wilson and James Callaghan. In 1981, Benn ran for deputy leadership of the Labour Party but lost. He also had a role in shaping the 1983 Labour manifesto. He went on to become a diarist and speaker, as well as joining in the anti-war movement and speaking out strongly against the Iraq war. The Sun newspaper once referred to him as “the most dangerous man in Britain” because of his strong left-wing political views.

Benn’s son Hilary also joined Labour and is an MP for Leeds Central. He distanced himself from his father’s views by saying he was “a Benn, not a Bennite”.

Benn’s children released a statement following his passing: “We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all the NHS [National Health Service] staff and carers who have looked after him with such kindness in hospital and at home. We will miss above all his love which has sustained us throughout our lives. But we are comforted by the memory of his long, full and inspiring life and so proud of his devotion to helping others as he sought to change the world for the better.”

Labour leader Ed Miliband said Benn was an “iconic figure of our age”, “a champion of the powerless, a great parliamentarian and a conviction politician”. David Cameron said on Twitter: “Tony Benn was a magnificent writer, speaker and campaigner. There was never a dull moment listening to him, even if you disagreed with him.”

Pakistan: car rams into police truck killing at least seven, injuring 22 in Quetta

Friday, October 20, 2017

On Wednesday, at least seven people were killed and 22 were injured in [[Quetta, Balochistan province, Pakistan, after a car rammed into a truck carrying policemen. Abdur Razzaq Cheema, a police chief, said five police officials died in the incident and eight were critically injured.

Speaking to Al Jazeera, police official Muhammed Akbar said the incident took place on Saryab road. Sanaullah Zehri, chief minister of Balochi province, said, “it was a sucide attacker who appeared in a car with 70 to 80kg of explosives”. Reuters reported Pakistani Taliban had claimed responsibility for the attack.

Another police official was killed in a different part of the city. Lashkar-e-Jhangvi claimed responsibility for shooting and killing that official. They also claimed to have installed a bomb on the roadside. Officials said two Pakistani soldiers were killed due to that explosion.

At least five were killed in in a gunfire incident in Quetta last week. Earlier this month, more than a dozen were killed at a Sufi shrine in Balochistan in an alleged suicide attack.

What Is Gastric Band Surgery Versus Gastric Bypass Surgery?

What Is Gastric Band Surgery Versus Gastric Bypass Surgery?

by

Paul Tobey

If you are finally tired of yo-yo dieting and have been suffering from overweight issues your entire life then you have probably looked into gastric bypass surgery.

While this may be an option for you, this article will discuss the difference between gastric bypass surgery and gastric banding.

Both procedures are permanent yet, you should know that gastric bypass surgery cannot be reversed while gastric banding is reversible.

Gastric bypass surgery is an invasive procedure which makes the stomach smaller so that you feel full faster than when your stomach was its original size. Also, it will cause some of your food to bypass the small intestine. When food bypasses this part of the small intestine it reduces the amount of food and nutrients that are absorbed into the system.

Gastric banding on the other hand, does the same thing except it is a band which is inserted through a laparoscopic procedure. This procedure could take as little as 20 min. and the patient is released the same day. Not so with gastric bypass. Gastric bypass is a much more invasive procedure and is done by making an incision in the abdomen.

Gastric banding can be reversed. It is a simple laparoscopic procedure in which the band is removed. However, most patients keep the band for life because, once it is removed the patient goes back in many cases to eating the way they used to eat, until full.

And, when the band is removed, the stomach goes back to its original size. That is why it is a permanent solution as long as the band remains in place. This type of procedure has become much more popular because it is less invasive and in many cases less expensive.

Some of the problems experienced with gastric bypass surgery are things like; stomach pouch problems, vomiting, hernia, kidney stones, gallstones and of course infection. These problems are much less severe with gastric banding if they occur at all.

Furthermore, gastric bypass surgery is a complex operation in which many areas of the abdomen are involved while laparoscopic band surgery is a much simpler operation and gives much lower risk.

Gastric bypass promotes rapid weight loss over a six-month period while gastric banding is a much more slow and steady weight loss which is much more healthy. The gastric band is adjusted over time for maximum success.

In the end, it\’s up to you to choose which procedure is best for you and I would highly recommend that you do further research.

One of the things that you might want to consider is your health insurance and how you will pay for your procedure.

In life there are few shortcuts. However, these types of procedures are definitely shortcuts and will get you to your ideal weight faster than anything else. You will be required to adopt good eating habits and good exercise habits however you will not be able to eat more than the procedure will allow you to.
