Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Wikinews interviews Rocky De La Fuente, U.S. Democratic Party presidential candidate

Thursday, March 31, 2016

Businessman Rocky De La Fuente took some time to speak with Wikinews about his campaign for the U.S. Democratic Party’s 2016 presidential nomination.

The 61-year-old De La Fuente resides in San Diego, California, grew up in Tijuana, and owns multiple businesses and properties throughout the world. Since getting his start in the automobile industry, De La Fuente has branched out into the banking and real estate markets. Despite not having held or sought political office previously, he has been involved in politics, serving as the first-ever Hispanic superdelegate to the 1992 Democratic National Convention.

De La Fuente entered the 2016 presidential race last October largely due to his dissatisfaction with Republican front-runner Donald Trump. He argues he is a more accomplished businessman than Trump, and attacks Trump as “a clown,” “a joke,” “dangerous,” and “in the same category as Hitler.” Nevertheless, De La Fuente’s business background begets comparisons with Trump. The Alaskan Midnight Sun blog described him as the Democrats’ “own Donald Trump.”

While receiving only minimal media coverage, he has campaigned actively, and according to the latest Federal Election Commission filing, loaned almost US$ 4 million of his own money to the campaign. He has qualified for 48 primary and caucus ballots, but has not yet obtained any delegates to the 2016 Democratic National Convention. Thus far, according to the count at The Green Papers, De La Fuente has received 35,406 votes, or 0.23% of the total votes cast. He leads among the many lesser-known candidates but trails both Senator Bernie Sanders who has received nearly 6.5 million votes and front-runner Hillary Clinton who has just shy of 9 million votes.

With Wikinews reporter William S. Saturn?, De La Fuente discusses his personal background, his positions on political issues, his current campaign for president, and his political future.

Study says dogs can smell lung and breast cancer

Study says dogs can smell lung and breast cancer

Monday, August 7, 2006

Dogs can be trained to detect early and late stages of lung and breast cancer accurately according to a study published by California scientists in the little-known scientific journal Integrative Cancer Therapies.

The study took place over the last five years at the Pine Street Foundation, a non-profit organization which conducts evidence-based research on integrative medicine (combining complementary and alternative medicine and mainstream medicine). Michael McCulloch and colleagues used three Labrador Retrievers and two Portuguese Water Dogs, both common pets, that received basic behavioral dog training. The researchers trained the dogs to lie down next to a sample from a cancer patient and to ignore other samples.

The samples used were breath samples from 55 patients with lung cancer and 31 with breast cancer — the two types of cancer with the highest mortality rates in the United States.

After the training phase, the dogs’ accuracy diagnosis was tested in a double-blind experiment. Among lung cancer patients, the sensitivity and specificity were 99% accurate and for breast cancer sensitivity was 88% and specificity 98%. Because these figures seem almost too good to be true, cancer experts are the same time baffled and skeptical. The authors of the study themselves also say replication of the study is needed.

Importantly, this was independent of the cancer stage, meaning the dogs were able to pick up the scent of cancer in its early stages. This is important because in many cases, the success of any treatment depends on early diagnosis. However, the researchers don’t believe this will lead to the use of dogs in the clinic soon, rather they want to find out which chemicals are actually sensed by the canines, because they could be used in laboratory assays. “It’s not like someone would start chemotherapy based on a dog test,” Dr. Gansler of the American Cancer Society said, “They’d still get a biopsy.”.

The researchers were inspired by anecdotal reports about dogs detecting cancer. In 1989, a British women consulted with her family physician because her Dalmatian kept licking a mole on her leg. At biopsy it showed to be malignant melanoma. When diagnosed too late this form of cancer has a poor survival rate, but in this case early surgery was made possible, and the women survived. Prior studies showed that breath samples from patients with lung cancer or breast cancer contain distinct biochemical markers. This provides a basis for the hypothesis that some cancer types produce volatile chemicals that dogs could smell. A study published in the British Medical Journal already proved that dogs could use their exquisite sense of smell to detect bladder cancer in urine samples, but they were only correct in 41% of cases, and another study provided preliminary evidence that dogs could detect melanomas.

This doesn’t mean you can show your breasts to your dog and it will tell you if you have cancer, other physicians caution, and scientists do not advise people to train their dogs to sniff for cancer. Unresolved issues from the study include the fact that subjects were required to breathe deeper than normal, so it’s not sure whether dogs can smell cancer in normal breath. Also, whether this is a permanent skill that would be retained by dogs was not tested.

Finally, there are concerns that could arise over liability issues: who would be responsible when the dog makes a mistake?

Current detection methods for both lung and breast cancer are not flawless. For lung cancer, chest X-ray and sputum cytology (detecting cancer cells in coughed up fluid) fail to detect many early cases, and CT scan produces many false-positive results unless combined with expensive PET scans. Although it might be comparing apples and oranges, a $2.5 million CT scanner has an accuracy of 85 to 90%. Mammography also produces false-positive results, and it may be difficult in women with dense breast tissue. As such, another type of “pet”-scan, using dogs as a biological assay, might prove feasible for screening if supported by further research. Current tests are also expensive so the use of dogs for preliminary cancer testing could prove to be an affordable alternative for countries in the developing world.

Jo Jo Designs: One Good Bet For A Single Mom Decorating On Her Own

By Fenella McPherson

Are you a single mother-to-be embarking on the most wondrous and challenging responsibility of your life? Over the past two decades, there has been a dramatic shift in American child-rearing; more and more babies are being born to single moms every year. A small number are recent ex-wives or widows and some are young girls with unplanned pregnancies; but the majority are simply unmarried women unwilling to forgo the unique experience of having a child. Similarly, there is an increasing number of women who have decided to undertake adoption on their own.

Preparing for a newborn, while exciting, can be daunting under the most ideal circumstances, even where there are two parents to carry the load of all those decisions to make and tasks to be performed. Happily, today’s manufacturers and vendors, particularly those offering their wares on the internet, are making it easier and easier for anyone – even a first-time, single mom – to set up a beautiful nursery and equip it with everything her baby will need, from decorations to crib bedding.

Here are some tips that will help you keep the “fun” in “fundamental” as you go about acquiring the basic items you need to beautify your little one’s space using baby girl or baby boy bedding. Once you have decided on the furniture you require, your second and third steps will be to come up with a style or theme and then determine the colors you want or need to use.

Perhaps you already have strong feelings about the sort of graphics you want in the new bedroom or perhaps you will just want to browse through the products of one of the reputable and affordable bedding makers. Using items from one of the well-known companies makes it simpler to follow step four, which is to select only those linens and accessories that follow the safety guidelines for a baby’s room.

All crib sheets (and you will need several) should fit snugly around their mattress, which means that only fitted sheets are appropriate here. They should also have no loose stitches, and their ingredients list should contain no chemicals which might be harmful to baby’s health. Decorative hangings and throw pillows should be firm rather than squishy, and should be kept away from the crib to avoid the danger of suffocation.

When you are ready to shop, you will find various websites which will let you to check out the properly designed merchandise in the lines of JoJo Designs baby bedding. These lovely solids and prints come in a wide assortment of complete, coordinated linens-and-accessories ensembles packaged together so that even decorating on your own will be a breeze.

Creatively thinking about the theme and colors that goes with your interior design are the last two steps, the first step should be deciding on what furniture you will need.

Even when both parents are involved in preparing for the arrival of a newborn baby, although it is exciting, it can still be quite a frightening experience making all the right decisions about the work involved. Fortunately both designers and retailers today, especially those that can be found online, are making sure that it’s simple for all, even those on limited budgets like single moms, to create a lovely nursery space and put in whatever her new little one will require, from accent pieces to baby bedding.

Comedian Jim Davidson arrested as part of Yewtree sex abuse inquiries

Thursday, January 3, 2013

British comedian and TV presenter Jim Davidson was arrested yesterday as part of Operation Yewtree, the sex abuse investigation started following accusations against deceased entertainer Jimmy Savile. Police said the arrest of Davidson was not directly connected to the accusations against Savile.

Davidson has been released on bail until March. Henri Brandman, Davidson’s solicitor, said the complaints against Davidson stem from two women who were adults when the abuse was alleged to have occurred.

Brandman said: “The complainants were then in their mid-20s. Jim vigorously denies the allegations. He answered police questions as fully as he was able after this passage of time. He has not been charged with any offence. Neither he nor I will be making any further comment.”

As a result of the arrest, Davidson has pulled out of appearing in Celebrity Big Brother. The host of the show, Brian Dowling, stated before the arrest that if Davidson were to appear on the show, he would treat him with “the same respect as I’d give any of the housemates” despite Davidson previously calling the openly gay Dowling a “shirt lifter” and a “fucking disgrace” on an episode of Hell’s Kitchen.

Scientists find key human language gene

Scientists find key human language gene

Thursday, November 12, 2009

Researchers have found a crucial genetic difference between humans and chimps that could help explain our language and speech abilities. The difference lies in a gene called FOXP2 which encodes for a protein of the same name. This acts as a transcription factor, controlling the activity of other genes.

The human and chimp versions of the protein differ in only two of their 740 amino acid components, but when researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, replaced the human gene with the chimp version in neurons grown in the laboratory, they found it affected the expression of at least 116 other genes.

The results are detailed in a paper published on Thursday in the scientific journal Nature.

Author of the study Dr. Daniel Geschwind, of the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA, said the gene had a “major role” in differences between chimps and humans. “We showed that the human and chimp versions of FOXP2 not only look different but function differently too.”

We believe FOXP2 is not only important for the higher order cognitive aspect of language but also for the motor aspect of speech and language

Some of the affected genes control the formation of connections in the brain, whilst others relate to facial movements. Several have already been found to be involved in language disorders. Mutations in FOXP2 itself were also known to affect speech and language; the gene was first identified in members of a family suffering from language problems who were found to share a genetic mutation.

Frances Vargha-Khadem at University College London has studied patients with FOXP2 mutations, and agrees with the new research. As well as language problems, some of her subjects have changes in the shape of their jaws, mouths and tongues. She thinks that chimps may also have these differences.

“We believe FOXP2 is not only important for the higher order cognitive aspect of language but also for the motor aspect of speech and language,” said Genevieve Konopka, one of the authors of the paper at UCLA.

Previous research indicates that the changes in FOXP2 occurred around 200,000 years ago with the rise of modern humans. Geschwind also suggests that several of the related genes may have evolved together. Preliminary studies have shown signs that they too emerged relatively recently.

Scientists are now keen to further study FOXP2 and the genes that it affects. Geschwind believes this could eventually lead to breakthroughs in treatment for disorders such as autism and schizophrenia, which affect language skills.

The study was funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, the A.P. Giannini Foundation and the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression.

How To Treat Acne In Males And Acne In Females?

Acne is considered to be a problem of the adolescence. It affects teenagers mostly because it is primarily caused by hormonal imbalance, which occurs during the growing up years. However, this does not mean that the grown ups are immune to the problem. Men and women of all ages are susceptible to the problem. The basic fact is that it can catch up with amazing swiftness to even those who reach the age of 40, or more.

Acne In Men

Among men, there are a number of factors that can cause acne. Excessive secretion of oil and clogged pores are the basic cause of acne. Those who have oily skin are prone to the problem. So, if you have oily skin and your job demands you to stay in dusty environment, the likelihood of your developing acne problem is heightened manifold irrespective of age.

A substandard shaving cream may also cause acne. The same goes for after shave lotions. So, you need to take care of a few things. Use a fresh, good quality blade every time you shave, and use a good shaving cream.

Another cause of acne is stress. The hectic lives we lead today bring stress as a byproduct. This could be a reason for your acne. This does not mean that stress necessarily causes acne. Whether or not the stress would cause acne depends upon whether or not your skin is prone to acne. You have to be extra careful if you have been a teenager with the extended period of acne problem or you suffered from severe acne during your growing up years.

Acne In Women

So far as women are concerned, they are prone to acne at all those stages where they undergo hormonal changes. Acne, therefore, is likely to breakout during pregnancy and around the time of menopause because during these stages hormonal levels fluctuate.

Therefore, it is prudent that the women who are prone to acne prepare themselves beforehand by arming themselves with information and medical advice before the pregnancy and menopause.

Acne, therefore, is not simply a teenagers problem. It might affect the elders too. Thus, it is important that you are prepared and not taken by surprise when acne breaks out.

Presentation of the textbook “Hobo tourism”

Thursday, September 15, 2022

On Wednesday, September 14, Russian author, Viktor Pinchuk gave a presentation relating to his new book, Hobo Tourism at the literary festival, “CrimeaBookFest – 2022” ( ru: ??????????? – 2022). The event was hosted at the Crimean Republican Universal Scientific Library named after Ivan Franko.

The lecture was attended by listeners of different age categories. The presentation, accompanied by a demonstration of the photo and video material, lasted a little over an hour. The lecturer was asked a number of questions. The book was released in both English and Russian. Reportedly, the book’s focus is toward travelers who want to visit as many countries as possible but have modest financial means. The book discusses methods similar to the well-known, pro-Western backpacking.

On forty-five pages, the nuances of a long intercontinental trip in the hobo tour format are described in detail: overnight accommodation options (among which there are extravagant and exotic ones); use of transport; necessary equipment; food self-sufficiency advice. A separate category contains educational materials, where the creator of the textbook, using many years of experience, gives readers recommendations on how to avoid tragic mistakes in distant countries, citing specific examples from their own practice. And as an optional material, articles with a detailed description of the traveler’s expeditions are presented.

Concluding speech, the author spoke about cases from his own practice that are not mentioned on the pages of the textbook. In particular, about a two-week stay in a comfortable hotel (two swimming pools, three meals a day in a restaurant with a choice of dishes, a private room) near the city of Nadi (Fiji), where he was placed by local emigration authorities, before deportation from the island state, commenting on the events with a quote from his own book:

A paradise in which there is no way to leave the territory is a hell for a traveler.

Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

">
Toothpaste fills cavities without drilling

Thursday, February 24, 2005

A paste containing synthetic tooth enamel can seal small cavities without drilling. Kazue Yamagishi and colleagues at the FAP Dental Institute in Tokyo say that the paste can repair small cavities in 15 minutes.

Currently, fillers don’t stick to such small cavities so dentists must drill bigger holes. Hydroxyapatite crystals, of which natural enamel is made, bond with teeth to repair tiny areas of damage.

Yamagishi and colleagues have tested their paste on a lower premolar tooth that showed early signs of decay. They found that the synthetic enamel merged with the natural enamel. The synthetic enamel also appears to make teeth stronger which will improve resistance to future decay. As with drilling, however, there is still the potential for pain: The paste is strongly acidic to encourage crystal growth and causes inflammation if it touches the gums.

The paste is reported in the journal Nature.
