Gay Talese on the state of journalism, Iraq and his life

Saturday, October 27, 2007

Gay Talese wants to go to Iraq. “It so happens there is someone that’s working on such a thing right now for me,” the 75-year-old legendary journalist and author told David Shankbone. “Even if I was on Al-Jazeera with a gun to my head, I wouldn’t be pleading with those bastards! I’d say, ‘Go ahead. Make my day.'”

Few reporters will ever reach the stature of Talese. His 1966 profile of Frank Sinatra, Frank Sinatra Has a Cold, was not only cited by The Economist as the greatest profile of Sinatra ever written, but is considered the greatest of any celebrity profile ever written. In the 70th anniversary issue of Esquire in October 2003, the editors declared the piece the “Best Story Esquire Ever Published.”

Talese helped create and define a new style of literary reporting called New Journalism. Talese himself told National Public Radio he rejects this label (“The term new journalism became very fashionable on college campuses in the 1970s and some of its practitioners tended to be a little loose with the facts. And that’s where I wanted to part company.”)

He is not bothered by the Bancrofts selling The Wall Street Journal—”It’s not like we should lament the passing of some noble dynasty!”—to Rupert Murdoch, but he is bothered by how the press supported and sold the Iraq War to the American people. “The press in Washington got us into this war as much as the people that are controlling it,” said Talese. “They took information that was second-hand information, and they went along with it.” He wants to see the Washington press corp disbanded and sent around the country to get back in touch with the people it covers; that the press should not be so focused on–and in bed with–the federal government.

Augusten Burroughs once said that writers are experience junkies, and Talese fits the bill. Talese–who has been married to Nan Talese (she edited James Frey‘s Million Little Piece) for fifty years–can be found at baseball games in Cuba or the gay bars of Beijing, wanting to see humanity in all its experience.

Below is Wikinews reporter David Shankbone’s interview with Gay Talese.

Auto Dealer Supplies: Three Items That Market Your Company Even Better Than Your Sales People.}

Auto dealer supplies: three items that market your company even better than your sales people.

by

Bob Keppel

Most vehicle dealerships commit too much money on cosmetic items that draw short-term focus on their cars. But they need to allocate a larger portion of their supplies budget to purchasing things that will more permanently brand their dealership with their current clients and create more recurring business and prospects. But they should allocate a larger portion of their supplies allowance to purchasing things that may more lastingly brand their car dealership with their current customers and create more recurring business and referrals.

A good example of this would be the service indication sticker label placed in the upper left corner of the customer’s windshield. This reminder sticker will only be successful in building repeat business if this includes your dealer logo and contact info. Simple stickers don’t build loyalty. They merely encourage your client to have their car maintained at the closest and cheapest service shop. License plate frames must be designed and chosen with forethought. The most significant source for new customers is currently your website, not your telephone number. Your internet site is easier to remember quickly. Insert your website address visibly towards the bottom of your plate frames. And in the event that your dealership has a particularly lengthy company name, shorten it in a fashion that is simple to remember and put this name near the top of the plate. This plate frame may be seen by up to 20 vehicles daily at red lights. Over a year, you may expect six hundred impressions. And over the duration of the vehicle, which may be about twelve years, you might receive 7000 impressions for your company. So, it’s obviously very important this be created correctly from the start. Finally, with each new sale, there is an opportunity to place a simple final detail on the deck lid of the customer’s vehicle. It’s normal for a lot of customers to ask that the decal be taken off. But if you provide them an excellent experience, they are happy to leave the decal in its place and promote your dealership for as long as they have the vehicle. Additionally note that graphics get more interest and views, because they are placed in an area where people do not often see a branding message. You may also extend a special branding sales message on your vinyl decals which you cannot fit on your plate frames. For under one dollar, you can create a long term investment in your dealership’s marketing message with vinyl stickers. So once you set a plan for marketing materials, make certain that at least 50% of these items will have a significantly longer lifespan than flags, balloons, and other short-term equipment. Invest for the long term, and you’ll receive long-term returns.

Reuters retracts image; suspends employee due to threat

Sunday, August 6, 2006

The Reuters news agency has retracted a photograph of Beirut, Lebanon, after finding out that it was altered. Reuters released a statement saying: “Photo editing software was improperly used on this image. A corrected version will immediately follow this advisory. We are sorry for any inconvience.” The photograph had shown two plumes of black smoke rising out of buildings in Beirut.

Meanwhile a Reuters employee was suspended after using Reuters internet access to issue a threat saying, “I look forward to the day when you pigs get your throats cut.” The e-mail was sent to Charles Johnson, who maintains the Little Green Footballs blog. Johnson said: “This particular death threat is a bit different from the run of the mill hate mail we get around here, because an IP lookup on the sender reveals that he/she/it was using an account at none other than Reuters News. I think it’s more than fair to say that Reuters has a big problem.”

Reuters spokesman Ed Williams said: “I can confirm that an employee has been suspended pending further investigation. The individual was not an employee of Reuters’ news division.”

Chinese police arrest six after woman beaten to death at Shandong McDonald’s

Chinese police arrest six after woman beaten to death at Shandong McDonald’s

Sunday, June 1, 2014

Police in China announced yesterday the arrests of six people who reportedly pled guilty to murdering a woman by bludgeoning her to death at a McDonald’s restaurant in the city of Zhaoyuan, Shandong province. Police said they believed the suspects, who included a man, his reportedly twelve-year-old son, and two daughters, along with two other women, were members of a cult known as Quannengshen, Chinese meaning “All-powerful spirit”.

Police said the victim, surname Wu, refused to give the man, surname Zhang, her telephone number when he solicited her for induction into the group, following which, Zhang began to bludgeon her with a mop before the other suspects joined in the assault. The Australian cited claims from uncensored websites saying the women who accompanied Zhang shouted “beat her to death” prior to attacking the victim themselves.

The son, who can’t be held criminally responsible in China due to his age, will be “dealt with separately” according to authorities. Following the incident, state broadcaster China Central Television reported discovery of religious material at a location connected to Quannengshen.

Video footage of the assault has been uploaded to the internet, along with photos of Wu motionless on the floor of the restaurant in a pool of blood. Though taken to hospital, Wu, who was reportedly the mother of a young son, died. The incident has drawn the criticism of netizens online, who highlighted the presence of dozens of other customers in the restaurant who stood by and filmed the assault, while doing nothing to stop the attack or assist the victim.

According to the newspaper Southern Metropolis Daily, Quannengshen, a doomsday cult which bases its ideology on the Christian Bible, began about twenty years ago in Heilongjiang province and now has members based in the eastern provinces of China. Reportedly the Chinese government declared the group an illegal “evil cult” in 1995. In December 2012, according to a report by the Beijing Morning News, seventeen cultists were arrested in Beijing for harassing people with an apocalyptic message in a public park.

The incident comes amid ongoing efforts by the Chinese government to control religious movements who base their teachings on Christianity and Buddhism. Another group, Falungong, also illegalized as an “evil cult”, was suppressed by the government in 1999, and reportedly had a membership of millions. The government has detained tens of thousands of Falungong members and, according to the group, tortured members for their beliefs.

McDonald’s has released a statement on its Chinese microblog, expressing “deep-felt grief” for the incident, along with a promise the company would conduct an investigation. Chinese state news agency Xinhua quoted Shandong authorities, “Local provincial police authorities vowed to severely punish illegal activities of heretic sects to protect the safety of people’s lives and property”. When the Associated Press contacted the police headquarters in Zhaoyuan, they were told by a clerk there was no one available for comment.

Tips For Creating And Purchasing Company T Shirts And Sweatshirts

byAlma Abell

There is a general misconception that everyone loves a free t-shirt or sweatshirt from their employer; however, the fact is that low quality shirts will not be worn and likely be turned into rags or simply donated next spring. There are far too many companies that provide extremely poor quality shirts, which are ugly too boot. A solution – purchase high-quality, great looking shirts that will actually be worn, some tips to get that done are highlighted here.

Purchase High-Quality Options

The fact is that companies purchase shirts that are scratchy and rough because they are cheap. A general rule of thumb is that if you would not wear the shirt, chances are no one else will. Find soft shirts that are fitted and available in a number of different colors. While they may cost a bit more, it is definitely a smart investment.

Be Bold

Your business likely has a uniform or some other type of appropriate work wear. The t-shirts and sweatshirts that you are giving workers should be a little bolder than traditional work wear. Show a little attitude and let your workers know that you encourage a fun working environment.

Select Various Designs or Colors

After all, variety is the spice of life. Consider different colors or designs for various departments, or one for the men and one for the women. You can also just mix it up offering an array of colors and allowing the employers to choose. Many printing companies will offer multiple choices, so you should find something that will take your interest.

Be Sure to Save the Screens

When you have a shirt screen printed, the most expensive and tedious portion of the process is creating the screen. However, once it is done, it will not have to be repeated. If you request for the shop to save the screen, when you re-order you can save several dollars for every shirt that is ordered.

Colleges offering admission to displaced New Orleans students/LA-ND
See the discussion page for instructions on adding schools to this list and for an alphabetically arranged listing of schools.

Due to the damage by Hurricane Katrina and subsequent flooding, a number of colleges and universities in the New Orleans metropolitan area will not be able to hold classes for the fall 2005 semester. It is estimated that 75,000 to 100,000 students have been displaced. [1]. In response, institutions across the United States and Canada are offering late registration for displaced students so that their academic progress is not unduly delayed. Some are offering free or reduced admission to displaced students. At some universities, especially state universities, this offer is limited to residents of the area.

Toyota poised to recall 270,000 Prius vehicles

Toyota poised to recall 270,000 Prius vehicles

Friday, February 5, 2010

Japan’s Nikkei newspaper reported that Toyota is poised to recall 270 thousand gas-and-electric Prius vehicles (model ZVW30) sold in the US and Japan between May and December 2009, due to a flaw in the car’s anti-lock braking system.

Takayuki Fujimoto, a transport ministry official, said the government has yet to receive a recall notice from Toyota. “Nothing has been decided on whether we will recall or not”, he stated. Toyota cannot announce a recall in Japan until it notifies the ministry, but said it was currently discussing how to deal with the issue with Japan’s transport ministry and U.S. safety authorities.

Toyota has faced a US lawsuit alleging it covered up safety problems. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration launched a formal investigation into the braking problems on Thursday after 124 complaints from consumers.

Since May 2009, two hundred thousand new Prius cars (model ZVW30) have been sold in Japan and another 103,200 in the United States.

Wagga Wagga, New South Wales —Sunday, Governor-General of Australia, Quentin Bryce and her husband, Michael Bryce, visited the city of Wagga Wagga to launch the Junior Teams event and present the awards to the winners at the 2013 Allen’s Coaches World Championship Gumi, meet the North Wagga Wagga residents who were affected by the March 2012 floods and meet a small group of volunteers from the NSW RFS, SES and the VRA at a community barbecue at Wagga Beach.

After the Gumi presentations, Governor-General Bryce addressed the media about the Gumi, stating that “It’s so quirky and I love the way it brings this community together, this community that’s known for its fantastic spirit.” She also commented on the floods which affected the suburb of North Wagga in March 2012. Bryce stated that “A very special thing for me was being at North Wagga Wagga this morning, to see people again whom I meet almost a year ago after the devastation of the floods in that part of the city, […] So many people have a long way to recover but their spirit, resilience, courage and determination, what they’ve been though, is a source for inspiration to all of us.”

US dog attack owner charged with involuntary manslaughter

US dog attack owner charged with involuntary manslaughter

Friday, March 25, 2005A Spotsylvania County woman, whose three dogs allegedly attacked and killed her elderly neighbor, was freed Wednesday by posting a $10,000 bond. Dianna Large, 36, received one felony charge of involuntary manslaughter and three misdemeanor charges in an indictment issued last week.

In her first appearance before a judge, she answered Circuit Court Judge William H. Ledbetter questions with simple “Yes sir.” and “No sir.” responses. The short hearing, held Thursday, formalized the charges against her. The involuntary manslaughter charge, a first in the severity of punishment being sought on a dog owner in the Virginan state of USA, carries a maximum penalty of 10 years.

State procecutor Wiliam Neely said that Large knowingly let her three Pit Bull dogs run free, and that an animal control agency person had warned her to keep them under better control. She also a violated a county ordinance requiring owners of dangerous dogs to post a warning sign to visitors. The prosecution also noted that none of the three male dogs were neutered.

The Animal Control Department of Virginia maintains a dangerous dog registry. It contains a list of owners whose dogs are deemed dangerous to society. The link to the registry was moved to a more prominent position on the county web page following the attack.
