Snow causes disruption in UK

Snow causes disruption in UK

Thursday, February 8, 2007

Heavy snow has caused disruption in the United Kingdom with airports and schools closed and delays on the road network.

Snowfall was highest near Worcester with 9cms of snow falling. The snow has caused hundreds of school closures and major disruption to airports with Birmingham, London Gatwick and City, Bristol and Cardiff runways closing although these have now re-opened. However the runways at Luton and Stanstead remain closed due to the bad weather.

The road network has also been affected with some snow settling and accidents occurring causing major congestion in some areas, althought gritting by the Highways Agency and local authorities has limited the effect on trunk roads and motorways.

Schools were closed in Birmingham, Solihull and Dudley, while some remained open in Gloucestershire, Herefordshire, East Anglia and Wales, Shropshire, Staffordshire and Cheshire.

Drivers are being warned that driving conditions will continue to be adverse and are being advised only to travel if absolutely necessary.

Train services by Midland Mainline and Virgin as well as the London Underground are affected, with delays, reduced services and cancellations.

The overall economic effect of the snow is predicted to cost the British economy approximately £400 million due to loss of work hours.

There has also been loss of power in some areas of Wales including Abergaveny, Llandeilo and Blaenporth.

The snow fall is expected to continue into the evening but may turn to sleet in some areas. Also cold temperature tonight will mean that there is a high chance of ice forming on the road network. Up to 15 cm of snow is expected through the day in some hilly areas but wetter and milder weather is expected over the weekend.

500 million US dollars worth of treasure found off coast of Cornwall UK

500 million US dollars worth of treasure found off coast of Cornwall UK

Saturday, May 19, 2007

Reports say that a team of treasure hunters from the United States has recovered over 500 million U.S. dollars (£253m) worth of gold and silver coins off the coast of Cornwall, United Kingdom in what is being called the biggest treasure find ever, but the exact location of the treasure has not been named because of security and legal concerns. The operation is codenamed the Black Swan Project.

Odyssey Marine Exploration made the discovery and the treasure is believed to be from a 17th century shipwreck located some 40 miles off the Cornish coast. There have reportedly been hundreds of thousands of the silver coins and at least 200 gold coins found in the wreckage, some in “near mint condition.” All the coins are being examined in the U.S. by experts.

“The gold coins are almost all dazzling mint state specimens,” said one of the founders of Odyssey Marine Exploration, Greg Stemm.

The reports came out when Doctor Lane Brunner, who is located in the U.S. and is an expert on coins, said that the team had to report the discovery to a judge in the fall of 2006 before the finds could be salvaged.

“They told a judge at that point that they had found the wreck of a seventeenth-century merchant ship in the Atlantic Ocean, just outside the English Channel – about 40 miles off Land’s End. So all we can do is add two and two together. It would seem logical given the timing and everything that could be the site,” said Brunner.

Reports suggest that the shipwreck is that of the Merchant Royal which is said to have sunk in 1641 near the Isles of Scilly.

“We have treated this site with kid gloves and the archaeological work done by our team out there is unsurpassed. We are thoroughly documenting and recording the site, which we believe will have immense historical significance,” added Stemm.

Unions battle in Ohio over hospital workers

Unions battle in Ohio over hospital workers

Wednesday, March 12, 2008

The Service Employees International Union, a trade union in the United States and Canada, was trying to unionize 8,300 workers in nine different Ohio hospitals through elections that were scheduled for this Wednesday and Friday. But then organizers from a second union, the California Nurses Association, visited the hospitals to encourage the workers to vote not to join the S.E.I.U. These actions led to the service employees union on Tuesday asking to postpone the vote by workers at the nine hospitals, all which are a part of the Catholic Healthcare Partners system.

Andy Stern, the service president is quoted as saying, “nothing more than a flimsy cover for out-and-out union busting that we normally see from employers, not organizations that claim to care about workers.”

The California Nurses Association, said it dispatched organizers to Ohio because in its view the unionization efforts were part of a “sweetheart deal”.

Rose Ann DeMoro, executive director of the nurses association, condemned this agreement. She called it “a rigged scam” in which the service union would bargain without care if they won the vote.

“This was a top-down deal between an employer and a hand-picked union,” Ms. DeMoro said. “There was a gag order on everyone, and as a result this was a banana republic election.”

“As for the future,” DeMoro said, “no election is planned.” She said that delaying the election was “a significant victory for employee rights.”

Dave Regan, president of a service employees’ local representing 35,000 health care workers in Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky, called the nurses union’s conduct as, “Their conduct is indistinguishable from that of the most vicious anti-union employers,” Mr. Regan said. “It violates every principle of unionism. Real people are worse off today as a result of their behavior.”

Orest Holubec, spokesman for Catholic Healthcare, said the system’s hospital in Lima had obtained a restraining order to bar the California nurses from entering restricted patient-care areas and aggressive leafletting outside hospitals. “They were doing exactly the kind of things we were trying to avoid,” Mr. Holubec said. “They poisoned the well to the degree that we didn’t have the conditions that we tried to establish for a pressure-free environment.”

Bihar class X student allegedly gang raped, thrown from moving train

Wednesday, June 21, 2017

A sixteen-year-old girl from Lakhisarai district, Bihar, India, reported to the police on Sunday that she had been raped multiple times and thrown out of a moving train.

She was found unconscious near the tracks not far from Kiul Junction by some locals who took her to a nearby hospital. She was later taken to the Patna Medical College and Hospital (PMCH). A PMCH doctor commented anonymously, “She has received at least two dozen stitches in her private parts, both her feet are irrevocably damaged, her thigh bone is fractured and she has serious injuries on her waist. Her condition is very critical”.

The girl, a tenth grade student, said she was abducted in a field and raped on, by reports, Friday or Saturday, by two men; according to Indian newspaper DNA, Santosh Yadav and Mrityunjay Yadav. She was later raped by several others — by varying reports, three to six — and taken on a train from Chanan railway station. Two of the alleged assailants lived in the same locality, according to senior police officer SK Singhal.

She was raped again, she said, on the train and received several wounds as the rapists mutilated her before throwing her out of the train. “I could hear them speaking that they should kill me and they threw me out of the train. When I gained consciousness, I was in a hospital”, she said.

As of Monday, police said one juvenile allegedly involved had been arrested.

Hassle Free Retaining Walls In Morristown Nj: Maintenance Made Easier, Every Day

byAlma Abell

So a family is debating how they want to separate one area from another in their backyard space. The obvious answer is a fence. But, that draws forward problems of privacy. Only a few fence styles can really block out an area fully, and they aren’t the most secure addition. They also need to be maintained throughout the year.

The superior answer is a retaining wall. Retaining Walls in Morristown NJ have a certain extra something that captivates visitors, draws the eye, and fulfills the amazing wish of having an incredible backyard landscape.

One of the best benefits of Retaining Walls in Morristown NJ is their lack of maintenance. Once installed, they act as a hassle-free addition to the yard. The wall will take care of itself. No annual inspection is needed. Concrete is notoriously durable. Aside from an “every other year” review (at most), the concrete will hold up wonderfully. It is also not conducive for termite damage, something that is problematic with any and all wood type fencing or walls.

Concrete and brick are also not likely to wear based on the environment. The worst that can be expected is some subtle fading on the brick- an unavoidable side-effect. The walls are built to stop soil flow and even water.

The thickness and durability of retaining walls, particularly in concrete, have other valuable benefits. For one, they retain soil. This, by extension, prevents the development of sinkholes that can wreck produce. Potential flooding is minimized due to the wall, which protects the surrounding property and landscape from any damage from flooding that could occur.

A retaining wall is installed primarily as a protective measure. But, they can be incredibly beautiful and special as well. They can block light (fully) and act as a backdrop to another addition. They can also be added to work in favor of a slope near the home. Few items excel in form and function. Retaining walls do both.

Visit Bednarlandscape.com. The site offers a detailed look at retaining walls and other additions to a landscape. A landscape deserves to be beautifully sculpted without requiring excessive maintenance. Contact a professional today.

Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis

">
Interview with Reggie Bibbs on his life with neurofibromatosis

Friday, December 14, 2007

Neurofibromatosis (NF) is a genetic condition causing benign tumors (neurofibromas) to grow along certain types of nerves and, in addition, it can affect the development of bones or skin. There are several variants of the disease but type 1 and type 2 NF account for the vast majority of cases.

The disease manifestations can vary from very mild to severe. Major symptoms include growths on and under the skin; skin pigmentations called café au lait spots in type 1; acoustic nerve tumors and consequent hearing loss in type 2. Growths can affect nearly all parts of the body, and pressure on nearby structures can cause a wide variety of complications. There is a small risk that the tumors transform into malignant cancerous lesions.

NF is one of the most common single-gene human diseases; around 1 in 2,500-4,000 live births are affected by NF-1, whereas NF-2 occurs in about 1 in 50,000-120,000. Both type 1 and 2 are autosomal dominant conditions, meaning that only one copy of the mutated gene need be inherited to pass the disorder. A child of a parent with neurofibromatosis and an unaffected parent will have a 50% chance of inheriting the disorder. The gene responsible for NF-1 and possibly NF-2 is thought to function as a tumor suppressor gene.

In most cases of neurofibromatosis 1, patients can live normal and productive lives. In about 25-40% of patients there is an associated learning disability with or without ADHD. In some cases of neurofibromatosis 2, the damage to nearby vital structures, such as the cranial nerves and the brainstem, can be life-threatening. When tumors are causing pain or disfiguration, surgery is thus far the only proven beneficial treatment option.

Reggie Bibbs is a 43-year-old-man living in Houston, Texas. Mr Bibbs was born with a genetic disease called neurofibromatosis (NF), which causes him to develop tumors on his body (see infobox on the right). NF can be a subtle disease, but in Bibbs’ case it has left him with a disfigured face and deformed leg. But he is happy with the way he looks, and doesn’t want to change his appearance to please other people. He has launched a successful campaign entitled “Just Ask”, and that’s just what Wikinews did in a video-interview.

The interview was prepared by Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent with the help of Bertalan Meskó (who has a popular genetics and web 2.0 blog). Their questions were sent to a close friend of Mr. Bibbs, Lou Congelio, who kindly conducted the interview.

World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich

">
World’s first double arm transplant undertaken in Munich

Saturday, August 2, 2008

A 54-year-old German farmer who lost both arms in a farming accident six years ago has become the first patient to receive a complete double arm transplant. The patient, whose name has not been released, underwent the operation at the Klinikum rechts der Isar, part of the Technical University of Munich (Technische Universität München), last week; he is said to be recovering well.

The operation lasted 15 hours and was performed by a team of 40 specialists in Plastic Surgery, Hand Surgery, Orthopedics and Anesthesiology, under the direction of the head of the Plastics and Hand Surgery department, Prof. Hans-Günther Machens, Dr. Christoph Höhnke (Head of Transplants, Senior Physician; Plastics and Hand Surgery) and Prof. Edgar Biemer, the former Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Clinic.

In a press statement released by the clinic, it was revealed that the patient had been thoroughly physically checked and had psychological counselling prior to the surgery to ensure he was mentally stable enough to cope with the procedure. Since completion of the surgery, the patient has been on immuno-suppressant drugs to prevent rejection of the new limbs.

Following the surgery, the press release from the clinic’s press manager, Dr. Tanja Schmidhofer, included the following statement:

The flow of blood was [re-]started in intervals of 20 minutes because the anaesthetists had to make sure that the patient would not suffer from the blood flowing back from the transplanted parts. No significant swelling was seen, nor indeed any ischemia (lack of blood flow to the tissues). This is a testament to the surgeons who established a fully functioning blood flow…the main nerves, the Musculocutaneus, Radial and Ulnar nerves were all attached and sewn together, and finally an external fixator was applied, with pins in the lower and upper arms, avoiding the risk of pressure points and sores. The operation was successfully completed after 15 hours.

Without the immuno-suppressant drugs given to the patient, the risk of there being a Graft-versus-Host Reaction or GvHR, would have been significant due to the upper arm containing a large amount of bone marrow, consisting of ICC’s or Immuno-Competent Cells, which would have triggered a near total rejection of the new limbs. A GvHR is a condition which results in the cells from the transplant attacking the immune system of the body.

Indications from the clinic suggest that the double attachment went well, although it could be up to 2 full years before the patient is able to move the arms.

The donor arms came from an unnamed teenager, who is believed to have died in a car accident.

Hurricane Isaac heads toward Atlantic Canada

Hurricane Isaac heads toward Atlantic Canada

Sunday, October 1, 2006

Forecasters are predicting that Hurricane Isaac could hit Atlantic Canada as early as next week. The provinces Nova Scotia and Newfoundland have been advised to monitor the progress of Isaac.

Forecasters said Isaac should stay to the east of Bermuda, but the Canadian Maritimes and Newfoundland could feel the outer edges of the storm.

“Some areas of Eastern Canada could feel the outer reaches of Isaac by sometime Monday or Tuesday. It was expected to strengthen slightly before then,” said hurricane specialist Eric Blake.

Three years ago the Maritimers suffered through Hurricane Juan. On September 29, 2003, in Nova Scotia, Juan killed two people, smashed buildings and left about 300,000 homes and businesses without power.

The Atlantic hurricane season began on June 1 and ends November 30. Isaac had top sustained winds near 75 kilometres per hour by 11 p.m. ET (UTC?5), the U.S. National Hurricane Center said. Isaac is the fifth hurricane and the ninth named storm of the 2006 Atlantic hurricane season.

Dentist Beverly Hills What Foods Will Prevent Tooth Decay?

Submitted by: Gloriabm Gates

Much of what you eat relates to the health of your teeth, and if you have a diet rich in sugary and unhealthy foods, there is a high chance that you will probably have cavities. If you hope to prevent tooth decay in the future, the foods within your diet can potentially keep your teeth protected. Some types of foods will harm your teeth, while others have the necessary nutrients to keep your teeth and gums protected.

First of all, it is best to focus on your calcium intake if you want to prevent cavities, mainly in your children as they grow older. Dairy is the ideal source to get your calcium, and it can be found in yogurt, milk, and cheese. Calcium is often high in fat, so it is best to choose options like low-fat yogurt and skim milk instead. Calcium can also be found in broccoli, bok choy, canned fish containing bones, beans, almonds, and Brazil nuts. It is also important to eat foods that are high in fiber to stimulate saliva in the mouth, which will cleanse the teeth and prevent the buildup of bacteria. Some recommended sources of fiber are raisins, dates, figs, bananas, oranges, and apples.

In the same manner, it is best to eat whole grains so that you can get B vitamins and iron, which will keep the gums protected and healthy. Whole grains also contain magnesium, which is a necessary mineral to protect the teeth and bones. Some of the top foods to eat every day are brown rice, bran, and whole-grain cereals as an excellent source of whole grains.

If you do have a hard time avoiding sugar in your diet, it is best to substitute them with healthy foods. In general, it is better to avoid overly sweet foods because the sugar will mix with plaque to break down the outer enamel of the teeth so that you are susceptible to tooth decay. As an example, each time that you eat a very sugary food, your teeth are under attack for the following 20 minutes. If you do eat very sugary foods, it is best to brush your teeth directly after eating to remove this built-up bacteria and keep your mouth protected.

As you can see, focusing on a healthy diet makes a serious change in providing protection to your mouth. It is imperative to follow a diet that is healthy to benefit your body and oral health by eating healthy food groups. This pyramid has been created to offer you healthy servings of all of the food groups that you need each day, which will not only protect the health of your body, but it will strengthen your teeth, gums, and bones in your mouth so that you are less likely to suffer from cavities and tooth decay. Make no mistake that avoiding sugary foods will truly benefit the health of your teeth and prevent long-term problems related to gum disease in the future!
