On Wednesday, FC Barcelona defeated Valencia CF 7–0 in the first leg of the Copa del Rey semi-final at Camp Nou. Lionel Messi netted three goals and Uruguyan striker Luis Suárez netted four.

The Catalans, Barcelona, have now scored more than 100 goals this season, and have not been defeated in the league since October, winning their last 27 games overall. Gary Neville, who became Valencia’s manager in December, has yet to win a league game, and the team have not won any of their last eleven La Liga matches.

Barcelona had greater ball possession in the match. Five yellow cards and one red card were shown.

Neymar assisted Suárez for the opening goal of the match in the 7th minute. Five minutes later, Alexis Vidal assisted Suárez, who netted the second goal, Barcelona’s 100th goal this season. Valencia were trailing 2–0 with less than a quarter of an hour played. Just before the half-hour mark, Neymar flicked on for Messi to score the team’s third. Valencia’s captain Shkodran Mustafi was sent off late in the first half for a foul on Messi in the penalty box, but Neymar missed the resulting penalty, hitting the post.

Messi scored from an assist by Suárez in the 58th and completed his hat-trick in the 74th minute, to put the visitors 5–0 down. Suárez scored from a header in the 83rd minute, assisted by Adriano and then in the 88th minute, he converted Arda Turan’s assist, giving Barcelona a comfortable win.

Go For Regular Health And Medical Check Ups

By Jane Simpson

Almost all of us are guilty, in one way or another, of neglecting our health even if we don’t intend to. Stressed-out moms and dads usually spend long working hours in the office to finance their kid’s education and pay for bills. On the other hand, there are model teens who forgo the ‘luxury’ of sleeping eight hours a night just to finish school papers and projects. All forms of compromise we make, such as insufficient sleep and fatty diet, have subsequent effects in our health. In our quest for achieving a good life, we often sacrifice our health and medical condition. The overwhelming pressure brought about by work, school, and personal concerns can very well make us oblivious of symptoms of serious illness or disease. Most of the time, people learn about their troublesome health and medical condition, like cancer and stroke, when it’s already too late to be treated.

No matter how busy we are, health and medical experts say we should always subject ourselves to regular check-ups. It is so normal for us to visit the doctor only when we feel there’s something wrong. But the thing is, not all symptoms of deadly illnesses can easily be felt and seen. For instance, a woman who has breast cancer may never notice the small lump in her right breast until she takes some time to self-assess her breasts. We may think we’re perfectly fine until we suddenly breakdown in a middle of the day and find out we’re not in tip-top shape after all. Younger people need to undergo general medical checkups with special attention on blood pressure or blood sugar (to prevent on-set of heart diseases and diabetes). Those belonging to the senior citizen-bracket should go for check-ups that can detect certain kinds of cancer.

Aside from general health and medical check-ups, women have to undergo pap smear annually to prevent cervical cancer or diseases related to reproductive system. It is also a must for women in their forties to subject themselves to mammogram. Breast self-checkup every month would suffice for younger women. Pregnant and lactating mothers also have to undergo pre and post natal checkups. Health and medical experts also advice parents to bring their children to the doctor for necessary immunization and proper health care. Since regular health checkups is indispensable, we should see to it that we have a family doctor. A family doctor is the one to hold all the medical records for future reference.

Pick Up A Fun Pencil Sharpener Start A New Hobby

By Miles Lovegrove

A pencil sharpener, also sometimes called a pencil parer, is to some people much more than just something to pare a pencil with. There are collectors who will tell you that an antique manual pencil sharpener is an investment. Some people collect fun, branded pencil sharpeners as well. Yes, you might not have thought so, but a great branded pencil parer is a collector’s item.

You can find them at the antique mall or at an online auction. Some specialty or novelty stores might carry them, too. Nothing brightens up a desk like a branded pencil sharpener. They come in all sorts of shapes and sizes. You can find an electric sharpener in the shape of a fish, where you put the pencil into its mouth and it electrically sharpens your pencil for you. You can get a manual pencil sharpener that looks like a slot machine, in which you turn the blades by pulling the slot handle. There are so many personalized or branded pencil parers that it would be impossible to mention them all here.

Do you have some old sharpeners lying around in the crawl space collecting dust? Somebody might want to buy it them from you. Dig them out and dust them off. Take them to your local antiques dealer and see if they are worth anything. The old, metal, manual kind with fun, novelty and branded shapes are worth more than an electric sharpener. If you have something with a company logo on it that might have been used as a promotional giveaway, you may have a branded pencil sharpener that is really worth some money. Cast iron sharpeners are also in demand by collectors, too.

Don’t sell it unless you really need the money, because the value for old, manual pencil sharpeners is only going to go up. If you have one that’s worth something, see if you can get the antiques man to give you an appraisal certificate for it. If the value is quite high, some insurance might be in order. You can put it away for your children or grandchildren as part of their inheritance. It might sound odd giving saving a pencil sharpener as an inheritance, but if it is worth a lot of money, then why not?

Maybe reading this has peaked your interest in branded pencil parers. If so, start looking for them. The old ones that collectors enjoy aren’t always easy to find, but the fun is in the hunt. Try the antique malls or looking online to see what kind of deals you can find on manual sharpeners. Some electric sharpeners are lots of fun for collectors, too, so don’t rule them out if they’re not 100 years old. Remember that if you are saving them for an inheritance, they will be much older by the time you give them away.

If you want something just to pare down your pencils while you are working at your desk, run to the closest store and pick up an electric sharpener. It will do just fine. But if you want to have a great hobby, start looking for fun pencil sharpeners everywhere you go. You might be surprised at how much you can enjoy your new hobby.

Space station crew perform successful spacewalk

Space station crew perform successful spacewalk

Monday, March 28, 2005

Commander Leroy Chiao (U.S.A.) and Flight Engineer Salizhan Sharipov (Russia), suited in Russian Orlan spacesuits, left the International Space Station on a 4.5 hour long spacewalk to install antennas for the European Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV), inspect and photograph other exterior equipment and launched the Nanosatellite mini-satellite. This is the last scheduled walk for the Expedition 10 crew.

At 06:25 UTC, the two astronauts left the station from the Pirs DC1 docking compartment/airlock and proceeded to install the last three of six space-to-space communication antennas for the ATV’s rendezvous and docking with the ISS next year.

Sharipov next deployed the foot long, 11 pound Russian Nanosatellite, tossing it into space by hand. The object of the experiment is to develop small satellite control techniques, monitor satellite operations and develop new attitude system sensors. Russian ground crews reported good signal reception from the satellite two hours after its release.

The two astronauts next proceeded to the aft end of the Zvezda service module. A Global Positioning System (GPS) antenna and necessary cabling for the ATV was installed and the men worked their way back to the airlock.

The station maintained its attitude, despite the loss of a gyroscope earlier in the space station mission, until the end of the spacewalk. Chiao and Sharipov reported being a safe distance from the attitude adjustment thrusters. Russian ground control activated the jets and normal attitude ofthe station was regained.

They returned to the airlock at 1055 UTC, completing the mission an hour earlier than scheduled.

Chiao and Sharipov arrived on the station October 16, 2004. They are scheduled to return to Earth on April 25, 2005. This marks Sharipov’s second walk in space and Chiao’s sixth.

Navy helping New Orleans pets

Navy helping New Orleans pets

Saturday, September 17, 2005

The Spanish word “tortuga” means “turtle.” But in the wake of the New Orleans disaster, the USS Tortuga is helping other animals.

For nearly two weeks now, sailors from Tortuga’s repair division have devoted much of their time during this disaster relief operation to ensure the health and comfort of displaced pets.

September 4th, just after the ship moored to a pier at Naval Support Activity (NSA) New Orleans, HT1(SW) Mark Hanley and DC1(SW) Antony Graves gathered materials from the repair shop on board to construct a kennel along the levee. The facility they made soon became a popular shelter for the homeless animals of the storm.

Tortuga’s search and rescue team brought aboard more than 170 displaced citizens during this past week, providing them with food, water, medical aid and a place to sleep.

Tortuga’s makeshift kennel, named ‘Camp Milo & Otis,’ has housed as many as 90 dogs, eight cats, one rabbit, one guinea pig, a pair of parakeets and a flightless pigeon during the past week of operation.

Currently, there are 14 dogs that remain in Tortuga’s care, as many of the other pets have been taken to animal shelters in the area for extra medical attention, or been claimed by their owners upon arrival to Tortuga. The pets that Tortuga has registered have all been in the hands of professional veterinarians assigned to provide expert medical attention to the members of Camp Milo & Otis.

Dr. Kelly Crowdis and Dr. Latina Gambles, both from Tuskegee University and Christian Veterinary Missions, have treated many of the pets for infection, dehydration, malnourishment and broken bones at the Camp during the past week.

“The animals were bathed and assessed before physical interaction with the sailors,” said Dr. Crowdis. “They’ve been given immunizations, antibiotics and medications based on their medical needs.”

Dr. Crowdis added, “What these sailors have done on their own has been such a heart-warming thing. As an animal lover, it is so comforting to know that everyone cares about the animals in addition to the human lives rescued from the storm. I’m very pleased with these guys for taking the initiative to construct this kennel.”

Graves, Hanley and other members of their division have consistently bathed, fed, walked and given special attention to every dog, every day.

“We play with them,” said Hanley. “We take them out of their kennels to give them attention every day. And we’ll continue to do that for as long as our ship’s mission keeps us here.”

September 11th, the Agricultural Center at Louisiana State University donated supplies to “Camp Milo & Otis” in support of Tortuga’s efforts to help the animal victims.

”We got medical supplies, bowls, food, cages, leashes, collars, toys, cat litter and cleaning supplies from these people yesterday,” said Graves. “It’s nice to know that so many people out there have heard about what our ship is doing, and responded by donating so much to support us the best they can.”

A photo gallery of unclaimed pets is on the USS Tortuga’s web site.

As part of disaster plans, the Department of Homeland Security has also deployed Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams to provide medical care to pets and livestock, as well as provide any needed veterinary medical care for search and rescue dogs.

There are over 3,850 animals being sheltered around the state. If someone is looking for a pet they should contact their nearest Humane Society or go online to http://www.petfinder.org// . More information is also available at http://www.vetmed.lsu.edu//.

Ford announces deep production cuts in response to growing losses

Ford announces deep production cuts in response to growing losses

Saturday, August 19, 2006

Ford has announced sweeping cuts of 21% (168,000 units) in its US and Canadian production, resulting in the partial closure of ten of its plants during the fourth quarter. The measure comes on top of existing turnaround plans announced in January, in which 25,000 to 30,000 positions should be cut and 14 plants closed by 2012.

Ford is the world’s third-largest automaker and the U.S.’s second-largest. However it has in recent years been struggling with poor profitability and shrinking market shares. In 2005 it lost $1.6 billion and recently the company reported a second quarter loss of $254 million and a 34% year-year decline in sales for the month of July.

George Pipas, director of sales analysis at Ford, points to rising gas prices having negative impact on the sale of the companies SUV lines as well as its sales leader, the F-series pickup truck as being the direct cause of the latest initiative.

So far the following plants are thought to be affected:

Ford’s stock fell 17 cents (2.1%) to $8 on the New York Stock Exchange.

byAlma Abell

If your home or business has an air conditioner or is part of an HVAC system, keeping it properly maintained and serviced will give you many years of comfortable service. The air conditioner not only helps to keep the establishment cool, it removes harmful things in the air like spores (particularly if your air conditioning is part of an HVAC system). Since keeping the comfort of your place is prime, the moment something goes wrong with the air conditioning, you will want to call a repair technician out.

1) If the problem is that your air is not getting cold, try these few things first. Clean the debris from the condenser unit. Clean the compressor also, ensuring to wipe the fan with a damp cloth. Make sure to clean all the possible air filters. It may be just that simple.

2) If you find that your air conditioner is making a lot of noise, don’t automatically assume the worst. It could be simply screws that became loose and need to be tightened. In fact, in a lot of cases, that is usually all it is. You can tighten as necessary and use lubricants, provided the area you are working in actually need the lubricant.

3) If you find that your air conditioner is leaking water, before you call a repair technician check for leaks in the piping. Unless you are an expert home improvement person, calling the HVAC repair person at that time is the best thing to do.
