Oldest living European person reaches age 114

Friday, April 2, 2010

The oldest European, Florrie Baldwin, turned 114 on Wednesday. Baldwin, who was born in Leeds, West Yorkshire, England on March 31, 1896, has been recognised as the oldest person in Europe since 2009.

Baldwin, who lives in the Radcliffe Gardens Nursing Home, Leeds, is also known to be the fourth-oldest living person in the world, behind Eugenie Blanchard from Saint Barthélemy (Caribbean), France , Neva Morris from the United States and Kama Chinen from Japan.

On reaching the milestone, she was sent a congratulatory telegram from Queen Elizabeth II, the British monarch.

David Worsnop, Baldwin’s 64-year-old grandson, stated: “When I’m chatting to people I don’t know well and I tell them I’ve got to go and see my grandmother they often give me a funny look. When my mother told the girl in the post office she wanted a Mothers’ Day card, the assistant looked at her as if she was crazy. But my grandmother is amazing, every year we say this will most likely be the last year we will do this. We have been saying that for 14 years but she keeps battling on.”

Baldwin puts the reasons for her longevity down to hard work and clean living. Worsnop adds determination to this: “I think that’s her secret. She’s very strong-willed. I think that’s the main thing, her strength of character.”

At least 40 dead after string of attacks in Pakistan

Friday, October 16, 2009

Pakistani officials have said that five attacks on government sites across the country have killed at least forty people. The latest attack occurred late on Thursday at a government residential area in Peshawar. Officials said they suspect Taliban militants for being responsible for the attacks.

Authorities said that the situation in the eastern city of Lahore was under control, following separate attacks on the country’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) and two police training centers.

Gunmen with at least one suicide jacket stormed the FIA building at mid-morning. The FIA is an agency responsible for investigating matters relating to terrorism and immigration. Early last year, the building was the target of a suicide truck bomb that killed more than 20 people.

“Reportedly, four men attacked the FIA building and initial reports are that two of them have been killed,” said the provincial interior secretary, Nadeem Hassan Asif Punjab.

Soon after the assault on the FIA began, gunmen targeted two police training centers on the outskirts of Lahore. In the suburb of Manawa, gunmen targeted a center that militants attacked earlier this year. In the other incident, attackers with suicide jackets in Bedian climbed over a wall to gain access to the Elite Force Training Center. It took several hours before security forces were able to gain control of all the sites.

Reportedly, four men attacked the FIA building and initial reports are that two of them have been killed.

The attacks in Pakistan’s east took place hours after a suicide car bomber targeted a police station at a garrison town about an hour’s drive from the northwestern city of Peshawar.

Speaking to local media, Pakistani Interior Minister Rehman Malik said intelligence agencies had expected attacks on security sites in the country and that authorities will remain on high-alert. He said the recent violence shows the militants want to bring the frontlines from Pakistan’s violent northwest to Punjab province.

On Saturday, militants with ties to Punjab, as well as the South Waziristan tribal region, assaulted the Pakistani army’s headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Pakistani intelligence officials believe the attacks are a reaction to the military’s raids on South Waziristan. The military is expected to launch a full-scale assault on Taliban militants in the region bordering Afghanistan.

Wikinews Shorts: August 18, 2010

A compilation of brief news reports for Wednesday, August 18, 2010.

An unemployed, single mother from South Carolina has confessed to suffocating her two toddler children with her bare hands. After suffocating her one year-old and two year-old sons, 29 year-old Shaquan Duley drove her car into a river. Police have identified the suffocated children as Ja’van T. Duley and Devean C. Duley. She faces two murder charges and is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday.

Duley had apparently argued with her mother the night before the murder. Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams has stated that “We believe this is a direct response [to the argument] from Ms. Duley. I believe she was just fed up with her mother telling her she couldn’t take care of the children and she wasn’t taking care of her children and she just wanted to be free.” Williams also said that Shaquan’s mother “was a very, I guess, firm individual. … She often talked with her daughter about, I guess, maybe being more of a mother or being more reliable.”

US officials said Monday that an American, Aijalon Mahli Gomes, sentenced to hard labor in North Korea was visited by a US consular official and two American doctors.

“We requested permission to visit Mr. Gomes. That permission from the North Korean government was granted,” said U.S. State Department spokesman Philip Crowley. Crowley also said that “We requested permission to bring Mr. Gomes home. Unfortunately, he remains in North Korea.”

North Korea said that Gomes was hospitalized after attempting suicide. Gomes was arrested by North Korean authorities and sentenced to eight years of hard labor in January after the 31 year-old man alledgedly attempted to cross the border with China.

American car company General Motors (GM) said Tuesday that it will recall 243,000 crossover vehicles due to faulty seat belts. The crossovers recalled include the Saturn Outlook, Buick Enclave, GMC Acadia and Chevrolet Traverse. The damage to the seat belts could happen after the second row seats in the car-based SUVs are returned to a upright position after being folded. The damage causes the seat belt to feel correctly latched when it is possibly not.

Choosing The Right Indoor Botanicals For Your Home Decor

Few decorating features make a house feel like a home quite like botanicals. During the cold winter months, they bring in the warmth of springtime. Many varieties of indoor foliage coordinate well with most different decorating styles. Decorators should be aware of the requirements of the botanicals they choose for a given room, while keeping silk plants and plant motifs in mind for unsuitable environments.

The first thing to consider is the room conditions. Make sure to check the amount of natural light available in a room before choosing a plant variety. Many understory plants do well in darker rooms or artificial light, while other plants require abundant natural light. Some may even require a warm, south facing window. Temperature is also an important factor. The rising cost of energy means that many families no longer keep their homes at optimal winter temperatures for delicate tropical plants. Some plants have higher water requirements and some need less water. Others need extra ambient humidity to thrive. Keep these light, temperature and water needs in mind when choosing indoor botanicals.

Succulents are relatively easy to care for. Many varieties need a good deal of light, but watering needs are few. They make a nice accent for rooms with south-western decor, but their design possibilities don’t end there. They also fit comfortably in terrarium environments, which can be styled to complement almost all room decor. Desert roses stand in remarkably well for high maintenance bonsai trees in Japanese decor.

Ivy is a popular choice for traditional room decor. Ivy comes in a number of types, from all weather ivy that is just as comfortable outdoors to indoor, tropical leafy vines. All types lend an old fashioned charm to a room. Ivy pairs well with warm, country furnishings, Victorian settings with old lace and antimacassars, and more modern decor as well.

Palms and bananas enhance rooms with a tropical feel. These plants may require extra light, but many are understory varieties which need partial to full shade. A few varieties are more cold weather hardy, but some are so delicate that growers must watch how low they set the thermostat in the winter. They pair exceptionally well with rustic woods and wicker furniture in natural finish or colors.

Dwarf citrus trees make particularly nice indoor botanicals. Their light needs are greater in the spring and summer months, so they become patio decorations. They need a moderate amount of water, with decreased winter needs. Depending on the type of citrus, they may provide small, edible fruit. Citrus trees pair best with neutral decor, but they can go equally well in a tropical room setting.

There are plants to fit any design theme in all difficulty ranges. Decorators who travel a lot or do not feel comfortable caring for an indoor plant can easily get the warm feel of indoor botanicals by adding realistic silk plants or bright botanical prints. A few easy to care for specimens can add a little bit of spring cheer to a room. More adventurous growers can look to more delicate varieties.

Dr. Joseph Merlino on sexuality, insanity, Freud, fetishes and apathy

Dr. Joseph Merlino on sexuality, insanity, Freud, fetishes and apathy

Friday, October 5, 2007

You may not know Joseph Merlino, but he knows about you and what makes you function. He knows what turns you on and he knows whether it is a problem for you. Merlino, who is the psychiatry adviser to the New York Daily News, is one of the more accomplished psychiatrists in his field and he is the Senior Editor of the forthcoming book, Freud at 150: 21st Century Essays on a Man of Genius. The battle over interpreting Freud’s legacy still rages, a testament to the father of psychoanalysis and his continuing impact today.

On the eve of the book’s publication, Wikinews reporter David Shankbone went to the Upper East Side of Manhattan to discuss the past and future of Freud and psychoanalysis with Dr. Merlino, one of the preeminent modern psychoanalysts. Shankbone took the opportunity to ask about what insanity is, discuss aberrant urges, reflect upon sadomasochism (“I’m not considered an expert in that field,” laughed Dr. Merlino), and the hegemony of heterosexuality.

Dr. Merlino posits that absent structural, biochemical or physiological defects, insanity and pathology are relative and in flux with the changing culture of which you are a part. So it is possible to be sane and insane all in one day if, for instance, you are gay and fly from the United Kingdom to Saudi Arabia.

U.S. manufacturer General Motors seeks bankruptcy protection

U.S. manufacturer General Motors seeks bankruptcy protection

Monday, June 1, 2009

United States automobile manufacturing firm General Motors filed for bankruptcy and Chapter 11 protection from its creditors at 12:00 UTC Monday, in a Manhattan, New York federal bankruptcy court. This was the largest bankruptcy filing for a U.S. manufacturing company, and with declared assets of $82.29 billion and a debt of $172.81 billion, and the fourth largest bankruptcy filing in recent U.S. history — after the bankruptcies of {{w|Lehman Brothers|| ($691.06 billion), Washington Mutual ($327.91 billion), and WorldCom ($103.91 billion).

The filing, expected to be the first of many, was for a New York GM affiliate, Chevrolet-Saturn of Harlem Incorporated. Numbered 09-50026, it named GM as a debtor in possession, and was filed before judge Robert Gerber.

GM is to be represented throughout the filing process by Weil Gotshal & Manges, a New York law firm specializing in bankruptcy.

The chief restructuring officer, named in the filing, is to be Al Koch, a managing director at AlixPartners LLP in New York, who will report directly to Fritz Henderson, the Chief Executive Officer of General Motors.

In its bankruptcy petition, GM listed its primary creditors as:

Name Amount owed (USD millions)
Wilmington Trust 22,000
United Auto Workers union (UAW) 20,560
Deutsche Bank 4,440

The amount owed to UAW excludes “approximately $9.4 billion corresponding to the GM Internal VEBA”. USD22,760 millions are owed to bondholders.

Analysts have observed that the effect of the bankruptcy filing on the U.S. economy is not expected to be as major as it once would have been. One such voice, Mark Zandy, an economist at Moody’s Economy.com, commented that “Bankruptcy now is irrelevant in terms of the economic consequence of what’s happening to GM.” Such analysts believe that the economic impact of GM’s problems has already been felt, with its effects on parts suppliers and employment. They also believe that GM’s programme of accelerated payments, and its participation in a U.S. Treasury program to ensure prompt payments to parts manufacturers, will have cushioned the effect of the bankruptcy itself.

Speaking on Bloomberg Radio, David Cole, chairman of the Center for Automotive Research in Ann Arbor, stated that the fragility of the parts suppliers, the loss of whom would threaten the entire automobile manufacturing industry, was of more immediate concern than the GM bankruptcy.

Also filing for chapter 11 protection today were Saturn LLC and Saturn Distribution Corporation, subsidiary companies of General Motors.

As a consequence of the bankruptcy, General Motors Corporation (GM.N) was removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average, and was replaced by Cisco Systems (CSCO.O), these changes scheduled by Dow Jones & Company to take effect from the opening of trading on June 8.
