Four dead, at least 15 injured after gunman opens fire at fitness center in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania

Wednesday, August 5, 2009

Four people have been shot and killed and at least 15 wounded when a gunman opened fire inside a LA Fitness center in Bridgeville, Pennsylvania. The gunman was among the dead.

Reports say the man walked into a dance room where an all-female Latin dance class was in session, turned off the lights and began to shoot people. CNN reports that the gunman was a “middle-aged white male.” One witness said he was carrying a duffel bag, which he put down before shooting into the crowd. After opening fire, he turned the gun on himself. At least 30 people are reported to have been in the room at the time of the shooting.

Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt said, “I’ve never seen nothing quite like this. It was very chaotic. […] There’s a good belief that the shooter is deceased.”

Collier Township Police Chief Tom Devin stated that the police, “believe the shooter committed suicide at the scene but we’re not positive.” Police report that the shooter’s motive may have been a domestic dispute with one of the exercisers.

Mike Hentosz, a witness who was inside the gym, said, “I feel like it’s a dream. I don’t know what to think of it.” A woman participating in the class, Nicole, said that 10 minutes into the class, “a middle-aged white male walked into the class. He had a big gym bag. […] He looked out of place in a class full of women.” When he began firing, she reported, she ran out of the gym and escaped in passerby’s car.

Baby dies after being found abandoned behind shop in Gwent, Wales

Baby dies after being found abandoned behind shop in Gwent, Wales

Saturday, March 20, 2010

According to an announcement from Gwent Police, a baby boy has died after being found abandoned behind a convenience store in Gwent, Wales. The boy, who has not yet been identified, was found behind a Spar convenience store in the town of Cwmcarn at 1815 GMT on Tuesday. The baby was found to be wrapped in a towel which was in a plastic shopping bag. Bystanders who were walking past the scene mistakenly believed that the bag had been unintentionally left there by a person who had visited the gym that is located next to the store.

A 14-year-old boy, who is the son of the man who owns the convenience store, then examinied the bag and discovered the baby. He made a phone call to the emergency services, however, when the baby was taken to Royal Gwent Hospital, it was pronounced dead on arrival. The baby was younger than one day old at the time of his death. A post-mortem examination proved to be indeterminate. Gwent Police have now launched an investigation to try and determine the identity of the baby’s mother.

Gursewak Singh, the father of the person who discovered the baby and the owner of the shop, explained: “We asked friends and colleagues what the bag was doing there, but it didn’t belong to anyone. A boy who works with us said it was just a towel in there and he didn’t open it. In the evening I went out to it and opened it, only saw a towel on top and didn’t look thoroughly. I just thought it was clothes underneath and didn’t want to root through them. I picked it up and hanged it on the gatepost so someone walking by might see it and recognise it as theirs. At about six o’clock there was a power cut and my 14-year-old son went out and picked up the bag and opened it and saw a little head in there. He called his uncle and said: ‘It’s not clothes, come and look’. They came over and saw the baby in there.” Singh commented that this incident “was shocking. We were all devastated. I wish we had checked earlier. If we had gone through the bag we could have made a difference. I’m worried what sort of condition the person who left the bag is in. We are so concerned about her. Other people saw the bag, but nobody thought about it. There could be a baby still alive. I wish we had checked straight away.”

Gwent Police member Superintendent John Burley stated about this case: “We are extremely concerned about the health and wellbeing of the mother of the baby and are appealing for her to come forward to receive any medical treatment she may require. This is a tragic incident which will sadden the local community and our priority at the moment is finding the mother of the baby. I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the vicinity of the Spar store on Thursday morning or afternoon who may be able to offer any information to assist our inquiry.”

Arson suspected in Namdaemun gate fire in Seoul

Arson suspected in Namdaemun gate fire in Seoul

Monday, February 11, 2008

Around 8:50 p.m. Korean Standard Time (11:50 UTC) on Sunday, a fire broke out at Sungnyemun Gate (more commonly referred to as Namdaemun Gate), one of the most iconic South Korean landmarks, located in the center of Seoul.

Approximately 30 firetrucks and 90 firefighters were sent to the site and were able to bring the initial blaze under control by around 10:30 p.m.

However, around 10:40 p.m., the fire rekindled at the second floor of the gate, as firefighters were in the process of extinguishing embers. By 11:00 p.m. the fire had spread over to the roof of the gate. The Korean Fire Department reports that the second blaze had started as the Department was seeking permission from the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration to dismantle parts of the gate in order to stop any possible further fires from spreading.

At about 12:40 a.m. of the 11th, the second floor had collapsed, and the fire was spreading to the first floor; at 1:50 a.m. the first floor collapsed.

Officials have yet to reach a conclusion on the origin of fire, and have presented three possibilities; arson, electric faults or accidental origins.

As the interior of the second floor of the Gate is off-limits to civilians, the Korean Fire Department initially eliminated the possibility of arson, and stated that an electric short or spark from the electric lighting could have been the cause. This possibility was later discarded as a firefighter reported, after examination, that there was no electric wiring on the second floor, as Korean Cultural Heritage Administration regulations prohibit it.

Three eye-witnesses have submitted testimonies. A taxi driver has reported seeing a man in his fifties climb up the staircase carrying a shopping bag, shortly after seeing sparks. Police have stated that the driver’s testimony differs in several crucial factors from the other two witnesses.

Firefighters have reported finding two cigarette lighters on the second floor, inceasing the possibility of arson as the cause.

Police have been unable to obtain evidence from the four closed circuit televisions(CCTVs) installed around the gate.

Officials of the Korean Cultural Heritage Administration have stated that restoration will take two to three years and will cost 20 billion won, equivalent of 21 million USD.

Officials report that no sprinklers or fire alarms were installed inside the gate, and only eight fire extinguishers were placed on both the first and second floor.

Namdaemun, built during the Joseon Dynasty, is the oldest wooden structure in Seoul and was entitled ‘National Treasure No. 1’ in 1962 after restoration.

In recent years, arsons started by evangelical Christians have damaged many Buddhist temples and Korean momuments.

Choosing Acne Skin Care Products Wisely

Choosing Acne Skin Care Products Wisely

by

Ray La Foy

Acne is a problem most people will battle at some time in their life. Whether it’s a minor break out or a serious condition will deem what kind of treatment, if any, is required to help tackle the problem and prevent scarring and permanent skin damage.

If acne is very serve, medical advice is often warranted for dealing with outbreaks. However, minor cases can be treated at home without too much difficulty. Making the choice on how to proceed should include the severity of breakouts, the duration of breakouts and if visible damage is occurring to the skin. If visible damage is present, checking with a doctor is absolutely in order.

To battle acne, it is first advisable to understand what it is. The condition basically is a blockage of the pores of the skin. When pores become blocked due to oils or dirt or both, eruptions can occur. These can be white heads, which are raised bumps on the skin filled with a pussy liquid, or blackheads, which are inverted breakouts. Both are filled with oil and bacteria.

Although medical science doesn’t completely understand why acne occurs, since it can happen at any age, in any skin type or color, many myths surrounding the condition have been debunked. Some prevalent myths include that chocolate, sugar and seafood cause acne. There is no proof to support the notion that diet causes acne. Stress, too, is often blamed, but this doesn’t seem to be the case either.

For those who think that face washing will automatically clear up acne, they’re wrong. Blemishes take place when a pore collapses from deep within the skin. They don’t start from the top down. Too much washing can irritate skin and actually make acne worse. A rough washcloth can further irritate the situation. Washing of course is important for overall hygiene, but excessive washing or scrubbing can cause more problems.

The best way to treat acne is to understand what kind it is and proceed. For those who feel the condition doesn’t require medical attention, over the counter remedies often work very well. The options here include benzoyl peroxide, salicylic acid, sulfur and other topical agents. These can work extremely well in minor to moderate cases and should be tried when possible. Following package instructions and using proper skin care techniques can also benefit the condition.

If acne is very pronounced, it is smart to consider seeing a doctor. Since severe acne can lead to scarring, it’s important to be seen before the situation becomes too advanced. A small break out from time to time is normal. In fact, babies and seniors might even experience a break out once in a while. Pregnant women are particularly prone to occasional break outs. This type of break out can benefit from home care and often show signs of improvement very quickly. A single pimple or even three doesn’t equate to severe acne, so relax.

Severe breakouts are not normal. Seek help and follow medical advice.

No matter how it manifests, acne is an embarrassing condition. A single pimple or a face-full of them is never good news. For the best results, use good cleansing practices at home, topical solutions if necessary and seek help in severe cases

Iran agrees to expanded monitoring of nuclear sites

Iran agrees to expanded monitoring of nuclear sites

Tuesday, November 12, 2013

Iran agreed on Monday to allow the United Nations (UN) increased access to nuclear facilities according to a government announcement on state television. UN monitors will gain access to a heavy water reactor still being built, as well as the largest uranium reactor in Iran.

The government announcement also stated that Iran would clarify its plans to build new uranium-enrichment facilities and technologies.

According to the UN nuclear chief, Yukiya Amano, the agreement will be put in place within the next three months. He said that Iran had agreed to “implement practical measures” to aid the UN inspectors.

This is the first deal that Iran has made with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) since 2007. The announcement came after talks between Iran and world leaders from the United States, France, China, Russia and Germany in Geneva, over the amount of access that the IAEA should have to Iranian nuclear sites. The negotiations stalled, but are set to resume next week.

The IAEA has been pushing to inspect Iran’s nuclear facilities for a decade, currently having access to only 17. The Iranian government continues to assert that their nuclear program is peaceful, and wants the UN to lift sanctions.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said in Parliament on Monday that “It’s very important for the Iranian authorities to understand that the pressure will be there for greater sanctions… unless an agreement is reached on these matters.”

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius acknowledged that the agreement reached on Monday is a good sign for diplomacy, but also said that more work needed to be done. “We are not far from an agreement with the Iranians, but we are not there yet,” he said on Europe 1 radio.

Swan in Fife, Scotland dies with H5N1 bird flu virus infection

Swan in Fife, Scotland dies with H5N1 bird flu virus infection

Thursday, April 6, 2006

It has been confirmed that tests done on a dead Mute Swan found in the village of Cellardyke in Fife, Scotland has tested positive for the deadly strain of H5N1 Bird Flu virus. The swan is believed to have been native to Scotland.

Two other swans found in Richmond Park in Glasgow are being tested for the H5N1 virus. They are among at least 14 other dead birds and 12 more swans found in Glasgow, that are being tested for the H5N1 virus.

This is the United Kingdom‘s first confirmed case of the H5N1 virus and would make the U.K. the 14th country to report the virus.

“The risk to humans has not changed by the fact that we have found the virus in the U.K.. There is a better chance of a person winning the national lottery than catching bird flu in the U.K. today,” said Doctor Jim Robertson from the National Institutes for Biological Standards and Control in a press conference.

“We also have to work on the assumption that there is some spread among wild birds. There is no doubt we are getting closer to the day when moving birds indoors will be necessary,” said former President of the British Veterinary Association, Bob McCracken. “The situation is that the virus is there, and it will probably continue to circulate among the birds. It will spread through close contact, irrespective of species. There is one big question mark: Will the virus disappear from wild birds after a period of six months, or will it still be present after a period of six years?” added McCracken.

McCracken also said that the virus could turn up in more birds saying, “I would start from the assumption that a small pool of wild birds in the Fife area are infected and potentially passing it on to other birds” and that seagulls could pose a threat of passing on the virus because they have been known to peck at the bodies of other dead birds that were infected. “We have to assume that,” he said.

In a statement by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, released yesterday, the Scottish Executive confirmed that a “highly pathogenic H5 avian flu” virus was found in a sample taken from the dead swan.

The swan was discovered March 29, 2006 and has been confirmed as a domestic species and officials say that it may have caught the virus from another infected bird. Officials also report that the area where the swan has been found is being sealed off.

“In accordance with a recent EU decision the Scottish Executive is putting in place a protection zone of a minimum of three kilometres radius and a surveillance zone of 10 kilometers. Keepers of birds in the protection zone are being instructed to isolate their birds from wild birds, by taking them indoors where ever possible,” said the Scottish Executive in a statement.

Samples from the swan were sent to the European Union Bird Flu Laboratory at Weybridge.

“Bird keepers outside the protection zone should redouble their efforts to prepare for bringing their birds indoors if that becomes necessary. They must also review their biosecurity measures to ensure that all possible precautions have been taken,” said Charles Milne, Chief Veterinary Officer for Scotland yesterday in the statement.

An exercise named ‘Exercise Hawthorn’ was to prepare people for a possible pandemic was taking place yesterday and was halted just after the discovery of the dead swan. Officials were in the second phase of the exercise. Taking part in the exercises were the Ministry of Defence, the Association of Chief Police Officers, the Environment Agency and several other areas of the British government.

“I brought to an end the national avian influenza exercise to ensure that we can bring all our resources to bear on this situation. We are already in a high state of readiness and I have every confidence that officials north and south of the border will work together to manage this incident successfully,” said the United Kingdom’s Chief Veterinary Officer, Debby Reynolds.

However; today Reynolds stated “there is no reason for public health concern” and also stated that in order for Bird Flu to infect humans, it would require “extremely close contact with infected birds, particularly feces.”

According to the World Health Organization H5N1 has killed 109 people worldwide since 2003.

How The Types Of Property Management Vary

byAlma Abell

Property managers are one of the most important services any property owner can have. They are the ones who fill buildings with qualified tenants, keep the property maintained and make certain that all paperwork regarding the business is kept in order. Not all landlords want to have someone else manage their buildings, but for anyone who is feeling overwhelmed with the responsibilities of caring for their property or lives too far away to do the task effectively, a property manager is a necessity.

There are different types of property management, so what type of fees are charged or what services are offered will often depend on the property itself. Single family homes will usually be mostly self-sufficient because the person, couple or family inhabiting the home will typically arrange their own lawn care or trash removal services. In some instances they may also be in charge of small maintenance tasks.

This is entirely different than institutionally owned property like retail centers, banks or hospitals. In these instances the property management company will arrange all of these services to care for the property inside and out. This type of care is required to guarantee that everything will stay looking professional and safety codes are always adhered to properly.

In addition, many types of property management are perfect for home and business sellers who are no longer in the area and are anxious to get their property sold. They are able to know that everything will be ready for tours from prospective buyers or when an open house is scheduled.

Finally, a company like Rpmrincon.com helps all businesses, large and small, to track their costs and their profit. They offer a comprehensive accounting service that makes it easier at tax time to file forms and provides updated reports on a regular basis to the owners of the property.

In some instances property investors do not have the time or the resources available to manage all of their buildings on their own. Individual owners may lack the knowledge or the interest to find tenants or make repairs. For both of these types of property owners, management companies can provide an equal level of professional care.

Interview with Brazilian blogger Ricardo Serran Lobo

Interview with Brazilian blogger Ricardo Serran Lobo

Wednesday, January 18, 2006

Ricardo Serran Lobo is a Brazilian blogger who writes about his famous neighbor, the politician Roberto Jefferson, head of the Brazilian Labor Party in the Brazilian Congress of Deputies. Jefferson has become a major figure in the ongoing Brazilian mensalão scandal revolving around corruption and bribery.

Vizinho do Jefferson [1] quickly became very popular among Brazilians, describing the routine of Jefferson, while providing information about politics and fresh news about the scandal. Lobo’s blog got third place in the Best Of Blogs contest run by Deutsche Welle International.

Lobo gets an intimate look at the center of Brazilian politics by living in Brasilia, near residences of parliamentarians (including Roberto Jefferson), public buildings and the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies. Or, as he says in his blog: “near the eye of the hurricane,” a reference to the recent political crisis.

At first, Lobo began describing the daily activities of his famous neighbor deputy Roberto Jefferson. As the crisis moved on, he began to describe the political events regarding it. His writings evolved to not only what is going on with Jefferson, but what is going on in Brazilian Congress, and has interviewed politicians, including Roberto Jefferson himself.

The blog tries to be informative, with a lot of humour (common with Brazilians), and some protests against the bad habits of Brazilian politics in general.

Jefferson’s neighbor, the blog, is an example of citizen journalism and it shows that ordinary people can compete with professional media.
