Interview: Drupal founder Dries Buytaert balances community and company interests

Sunday, February 24, 2008

In the year 2000, Dries Buytaert created Drupal, a freely licensed and open source tool to manage websites, as a bulletin board for his college dorm. Since Dries released the software and a community of thousands of volunteer developers have added and improved modules, Drupal has grown immensely popular. Drupal won the overall Open CMS Award in 2007, and some speakers in Drupal’s spacious developer’s room at FOSDEM 2008 were dreaming aloud of its world domination.

Buytaert (now 29) just finished his doctoral thesis and has founded the start-up Acquia. The new company wants to become Drupal’s best friend, with the help of an all-star team and US$7 million collected from venture capitalists. Wikinews reporter Michaël Laurent sat down with Dries in Brussels to discuss these recent exciting developments.

Controversy over effects of new bankruptcy law on victims of Katrina

Controversy over effects of new bankruptcy law on victims of Katrina

Sunday, September 25, 2005

Hurricane Katrina has rekindled debate over the controversial Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005, in the U.S. House of Represenatives. Congressional Democrats feel that among the hundreds of thousands of victims of Katrina, many of whom have lost all their possessions and are coping with relocation, those that declare bankruptcy should be granted the protections of the previous law. 32 Democrats have sponsored a proposal that would delay implementing certain parts of the law to “insure that we do not compound a natural disaster with a man made financial disaster.”

The new bankruptcy law affects anyone whose income (as of the six months before filing) was over the state median income. Democratic legislators point out that many hurricane victims who manage to find work will be suffering from wage reductions, making them unable to effectively deal with their previous debts. Among U.S. states, Louisana and Mississippi have the fourth and third lowest median incomes, respectively. Democrats also feel that it is unfair to require repayment by bankrupted Hurricane Katrina victims while citizens in other states with similar incomes would pay nothing.

F. James Sensenbrenner, Republican from Wisconsin and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has denied a hearing on creating an exception in the law for the purposes of Katrina relief. He noted that “If someone in Katrina is down and out, and has no possibility of being able to repay 40 percent or more of their debts, then the new bankruptcy law doesn’t apply.”

The Bankruptcy Abuse Prevention and Consumer Protection Act of 2005 has been heavily criticized by consumer rights’ organizations. The Consumer Federation of America argues that “[the] new requirements, coupled with strict deadlines for production upon the penalty of an automatic dismissal are difficult for the most organized person to meet, never mind someone who has had his or her home destroyed by Katrina.”

Opponents of the bill also argued that it makes the government “a bill collector for private companies”, and could lead to criminal prosecutions over matters best left in civil courts, and theoretically even to life imprisonment under federal three-strikes laws. Such opponents view the bulk of the act either as “bought and paid for” by the Credit Card Industry, who spent millions lobbying in support of the bill, or else as an unfortunate compromise between the lobbyists for banks and bankruptcy lawyers, such as the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI). Nathalie Martin, of ABI, said that “Many people will still qualify to file for Chapter 7,” which means liquidation of assets in exchange for cancellation of debt.

What A Gps Tracking Cell Phone Can Do For You

By Roberto Sedycias

Global positioning system (GPS) is an important tool for any wireless system. GPS provides the geographical locations no matter where you are. Initially it was developed by the federal government meant to be used in military bases to accurately determine the position of ballistic missile submarines, prior to the launch of those missiles.

But in addition to military and surveying exercise, today GPS is used in many commercial purposes. It is used for air, land and sea navigation. Also used in law enforcement purposes for vehicle tracking. GPS tracks any location with the help of interpreting signals received from 3 or more orbiting satellites. This tool can also be used to know the weather forecast details.

Today, communication devices especially cell phones have become much more technologically advanced and are not restricted to mere means of conversation. GPS tracking in cell phone is one of such advance features. Before GPS, triangulation technique was used where three cell phone towers were used to determine the approximate location of any particular cell phone. But often the finding wasn`t precise. However, with the advent of this technology, one can get the accurate location within about five meters. The cell phone enabled GPS gives ten times more accurate than triangulation.

The compact size, great accuracy and easy mobility feature has made the GPS cell phone an increasingly popular tracking device. It enables users to accurately track anyone carrying a compatible mobile device. This feature in cell phones has many advantages. With cell phone GPS tracking, you won`t ever get lost anywhere. Any place can be located efficiently within a short time. Business persons can get benefited from this GPS enabled cell phones as they can track all their business matters through the navigation feature of these devices.

Another important utility of the cell phone GPS tracking can be in emergency services. For Police or Ambulance services, it`s easy to locate the call if dialed from a GPS cell phone. That`s why, the FCC legislated that wireless networks to supply location information for 911 calls made from cell phones. These calls are known as E911 (enhanced emergency) calls.

GPS cell phones are a savoir for tourists who in a new place often face problems while finding monumental locations such as museum, hotel, bars, restaurant, shopping complex. But the cell phone GPS tracking feature enable them to track any place they want to visit.

Following the aftermath of September 11, the FCC has mandated all service providers to make GPS tracking of cell phone calls possible. Hence since 2005, all cells have GPS-track option and the use of it are expected to grow manifolds in coming days. because as per one statistics, with in the next three years time, the GPS chipset revenue is expected to more than double to $1.3 billion and the GPRS enabled cell phone revenue is expected to be hitting 550 million units.

GPS tracking in cell phone has its own pros and cons. No doubt it is useful for keeping track of our loved ones, but there is also danger of infringement of privacy. Any compatible cell number and its incoming and outgoing number details can be tracked through these GPS cell phones but by companies who have been authorized license for this.

In case you wonder that your calls are being traced, don`t worry, for your actual conversation is not traceable with the GPS phones. It only keeps track of what numbers are being called in and dialed out. If you don`t want to be tracked, you can simply select the “hide” option on your GPS phone any time to opt out of the service.

GSK rejects three Unilever bids to buy consumer healthcare arm, says unit was “fundamentally undervalued”

GSK rejects three Unilever bids to buy consumer healthcare arm, says unit was “fundamentally undervalued”

Sunday, January 16, 2022

United Kingdom-based pharmaceutical giant GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) confirmed January 15 it had rejected three “unsolicited, conditional and non-binding proposals” by Unilever to acquire its Consumer Healthcare division, including one bid of GBP50 billion in value made on December 20, believing Unilever “fundamentally undervalued” the business and its potential.

News that Unilever attempted to buy GSK Consumer Healthcare for 50 billion pounds, split between GBP41.7 billion in cash and 8.3 billion in Unilever shares, was first reported by The Sunday Times, and subsequently confirmed by both companies. Had the latest acquisition offer gone through, it would have been the largest deal since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic, and one of the biggest ever among companies listed on the London Stock Exchange.

A deal would likely mean integrating the GSK division into Unilever’s own beauty and personal care business, which has seen profit margins struggle under Covid-19 lockdowns and higher costs for plastics and petrochemicals.

A brief response on the Unilever website confirmed it “had approached GSK and Pfizer about a potential acquisition”, and adds GSK Consumer Healthcare “would be a strong strategic fit” as the company looks to rework its portfolio. GSK indicated the proposals were “carefully evaluated” by its board of directors, but unanimously rejected under the conclusion they “were not in the best interests of GSK shareholders” and “failed to reflect the intrinsic value of the business and its potential”.

The Sunday Times have indicated the latest deal did not include an acquisition premium or recognition of corporate synergies; the joint venture between GSK and healthcare firm Pfizer, which holds a minority stake in the company, was initially projected to generate GBP500 million in cost savings by this year and realise “substantial cost synergies”. The BBC’s business editor Simon Jack wrote that a standard takeover premium would be about 30%, but could be reduced over the GBP10 billion in debt GSK was predicted to “leave on the books”, of the GBP22 billion net debt GSK reported for Q3 2021.

The deals were assessed by the Board respective of a proposed demerger of GSK Consumer Health into a separate PLC in the middle of this year. Jack wrote GSK “always” had “an open mind to a trade sale to another party if the price was right.” Unilever did not take into account the standard takeover premium, the value of cost savings and Board confidence Consumer Health could deliver “superior organic sales growth” of between four and six per cent in the medium term. This was despite valuations of about GBP50 billion by Goldman Sachs and Barclays analysts, and a lower GBP45 billion valuation by Jeffries Group.

There are no current talks between Unilever and either Pfizer or GSK, and the Unilever statement reads: “There can be no certainty that any agreement will be reached.” Under CEO Alan Jope, Unilever has focused its investments and marketing on brands which “communicate a strong environmental or social purpose” by streamlining its holdings in items like beauty products and tea. Jope previously said Unilever would concentrate on smaller takeovers in industries like luxury beauty and wellness.

However, Russ Mould, investment director at AJ Bell, told the BBC this would be a “high risk deal” at a time investors are cautious about GSK’s performance, but also a time of rising inflation he says encourages “consumer goods with loyal customers”. Mould added despite strong cashflow, Unilever had recently missed targets on sales and profit margins, putting pressure on the CEO.

Pressure by activist shareholders Elliott Management Corporation and Bluebell Capital Partners have also mounted against GSK CEO Emma Walmsley over the unit’s failure to develop a Covid-19 vaccine and Walmsley’s own lack of scientific experience. GSK has been involved in the ongoing development of a Covid-19 vaccine with French biopharmaceutical company Sanofi, and announced preliminary results from Phase 3 trials last month.

In 2018, Unilever bought several consumer nutritional products from GSK, including its flagship product Horlicks, and merged its Indian subsidiary, Hindustan Unilever, with GSK Consumer Healthcare India.

Westboro Baptist Church ordered to pay US$11 million to family of fallen US soldier

Westboro Baptist Church ordered to pay US$11 million to family of fallen US soldier

Thursday, November 1, 2007

The Westboro Baptist Church has lost a lawsuit and has been ordered by United States District Court: District of Maryland to pay US$11 million to the family of Marine Lance Cpl. Matthew Snyder, a fallen soldier, who was killed while serving in Iraq.

The lawsuit was filed by Snyder’s father, Albert, after the church held a protest across the street from the cemetery where funeral services were being held. The church was sued for, “defamation of character, invasion of privacy–intrusion upon seclusion, invasion of privacy–publicity given to private life, intentional infliction of emotional distress and civil conspiracy,” according to court documents obtained by Wikinews.

Wikinews has also learned that the church filed a motion for a mistrial on October 29, but was ultimately denied.

The jury ordered that $2.9 million be awarded to the Snyder family for compensatory damages and $8 million in punitive damages, but reports say that the church cannot afford that amount, with their assets worth under $1 million. The defendants plan to appeal the judgment and have expressed confidence they can get it overturned.

CFPB records fewer complaints in early days of US government shutdown

">
CFPB records fewer complaints in early days of US government shutdown

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Unlike some parts of the US Federal Government, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) has been open during the federal government shutdown and recording a record-low number of complaints submitted by consumers against mortgage companies, credit card companies, student loan providers, banks, money transfer providers, companies who provide credit reports, and other companies providing consumer loans.

With data not available for yesterday, the first four days of the shutdown had daily totals of 37, 16, 13, and 3 complaints. With the exceptions of September 29 with 15 complaints and September 28 with 23, it is the lowest daily total since March 16 of this year when 36 total complaints were recorded and February 23 of this year with 14. The total complaints are also down from the same dates last year, when the total complaints per day for the first four days of October 2012 were 272, 298, 288, and 225.

Of the 69 filed complaints recorded so far this month, 27 were complaints about mortgage companies, 21 were about bank accounts and 10 were about credit card companies. 40% of credit card companies complaints, 42.9% of bank account complaints and 48.1% of mortgage complaints are currently listed as still in progress. Most of the rest have been closed with an explanation.

Bank of America leads all companies in terms of total complaints filed this month with 9. Bayview Loan Servicing, LLC andJPMorgan Chase have 7 complaints each. Ally Bank, Sovereign Bank, and Wells Fargo have 4 each. Flagstar Bankand Equifax have 3 each. Citibank, Nationstar Mortgage, TD Bank, Amex, and FirstMerit Bank have 2 complaints each. 18 financial services companies have 1 complaint each filed against them.

During the government shutdown, some CFPB staff have voiced their opinions on Twitter. Dan Munz, deputy assistant director for consumer engagement at the CFPB, tweeted, “Boy, shutdown week has really created a sudden bumper crop of amateur federal management experts.”; “Also, seems like Boehner is singlehandedly undoing whatever progress he’d made in portraying this as a Dem [Democratic Party] shutdown.”; and “Basically, there’s now a strong incentive to fill legislation with minor symbolic things you can bargain away later to protect the core.”

The agency has been able to stay open during the government shutdown because it is funded by the Federal Reserve. According to Amanda Terkel at the Huffington Post, Republican members of the United States House of Representatives have put closing the CFPB on their wish list of items in negotiating for a new debt ceiling limit. Party members have previously stalled the appointment of Richard Cordray as the CFPB boss as a way of hindering it from engaging in oversight of financial organizations in the the US.

How To Organize Your Internet Business

How to Organize Your Internet Business

by

Ann Liu

Build a good foundation is essential to your online success. One of the key to that foundation is to organizing your internet business well. If you start to focus early on in creating an organized business, you will be able to spend more time on your sales and marketing – the most important part that brings you money.

Trust me, spend few minutes each day to set up your email, create an accounting system for tracking and managing your expenses will make a whole lot of difference in your business.

However, there are many people just “ignore” or “forget” such little things, but these little things are ACTUALLY very important! I promise, if you can organize first and do it in a proper way; your business will grow much faster and go much smoother.

ORGANIZE YOUR EMAIL

Speaking of organize your email, this is normally the first and primary communication tool you are going to use in terms of exchange the message with your subscribers, customers, teammates and prospects. This is what you will be use to let others learn about you, understand your information and communicate with you. You are using this tool to make your first impression toward to others.

If you cannot let your very first tool get organized, then how can you make any of your other things get organized?

There are many different types of email programs. All of them have those basic same folders, such as INBOX, SENT ITEMS, DELETED ITEMS, and JUNK MAIL. If you just want to receive and send emails to your friends or for fun, those folders are might be enough, but if you are going into the business, then those folders are NOT enough.

This happened to me many times before until I realized the importance of email organizing. Many times I read an email and thought, “Ok, I know it s there. I will just reply to it later”. Then what happened? I totally forgot to write back to the sender.

I read a few and reply to a few, then leave to do something else. After that I go back and I saw there are more emails coming in and I cannot remember who I replied to and who I have not.

To avoid further confusion, I create a new folder and give it a name “MAIL COMPLETE”.

This new folder helps me know that, the emails that are in my INBOX are the emails still waiting for a response. It is an easy way to separate the two, especially the ones that already been read.

At the same time, I also made another new folder; I titled it as IMPORTANT MAIL / FILE

I can put all the important emails and keep them in this folder, like billing information. Technology is bringing us convenience, which is true. But sometime it also has its own life. Therefore, for back up reason, I also print a copy and keep it in a binder or file cabinet.

For my online business, I made a special folder and name it “MY ONLINE BUSINESS”

I put this folder in “My Documents”. Then I made other folders and put those folders inside My Online Business folder. Here are some of them:

1. Promotional Brief Case

2. Important URLs

3. Important Articles

4. Info Requester or Prospect

5. My Ezine

6. My Accouting

7. Marketing Tools

8. Marketing Advice

9. Miscellaneous

You can create your own folder list, it is easy to set up and whatever the folder you want to name it all depends on what you need.

ORGANIZE YOUR RECORDS

Another very important thing you have to get organized is to set up an accounting file in Excel or buy accounting software to record your business expenses, revenue and profit. I use QuickBooks accounting software.

Again, you can create some files, save it inside your accounting folder; you can also keep it in a binder or file cabinet, or a shoebox. Then place all your business receipts inside. You need those files when the tax time comes.

Above those steps look like simple, but please do not ignore it! It is essential for creating a well-run successful business!

June jobs report shows rising US unemployment, economic outlook worsens

">
June jobs report shows rising US unemployment, economic outlook worsens

Saturday, July 9, 2011

The June jobs report for the US shows job growth has almost halted while the unemployment rate rose from 9.1% to 9.2%, much higher than March’s figure of 8.8%. Employers added only 18,000 new jobs, far fewer than the average of 215,000 per month added from February to April. These numbers add to fears that the economic recovery has stalled.

Analysts were predicting the job growth number for June to reach 125,000, according to a CNN poll.

It’s just an across-the-board retreat. This is two months of really scary reports.

Additionally, the figures for May were revised downward from 54,000 to 25,000 for a two month downward trend. To keep up with normal population growth, the US economy needs to increase the available jobs by 150,000 monthly. Only one fifth of the 8.8 million jobs lost since 2008 when the recession began have been added.

There was no encouraging news in the report. Government jobs fell by 39,000, and construction jobs remained stalled. Manufacturing added an anemic 6,000 jobs. The temporary-job industry lost positions for the third straight month. The average work week was reduced by 0.1 hours to 34.3. And the average hourly salary for private sector workers fell by one cent.

I view this number as a call to action. This number illustrates this thing that we knew, which is we’ve got to get the growth rate up.

The total number of unemployed people remains around 14.1 million, and 6.3 million have been unemployed at least six months.

“It’s just an across-the-board retreat,” said Heidi Shierholz, labor economist at the Economic Policy Institute. “This is two months of really scary reports.”

In an interview, Austan Goolsbee, Barack Obama’s chief economist said, “I view this number as a call to action. This number illustrates this thing that we knew, which is we’ve got to get the growth rate up. … When you see jobs reports like this, that should make it clear that we need to stop bickering, and get these things done.”

Original Story
 • “Hotel development proposal could displace Buffalo, NY business owners” — Wikinews, February 17, 2006

Monday, February 27, 2006

Buffalo, New York —Wikinews was the first to tell you that the Elmwood Village Hotel development in Buffalo, New York was to undergo “significant changes”.

The Elmwood Village Hotel is a proposed project that would be placed at Elmwood and Forest Aves. in Buffalo. In order for the development to take place, at least five buildings that house both businesses and residents, must be demolished.

To confirm and to get more information about the changes, Wikinews interviewed Eva Hassett, Vice President of Savarino Construction Services Corporation, the development company in charge of building the hotel.

Wikinews: The hotel proposal is being redesigned. Could you comment on that? What changes are being made? Are they significant?

Eva Hassett: The hotel has been resized as a 72-room, four story building. This is 10% smaller in number of rooms and a full story lower. We are also redesigning the facades in a way that will minimize the mass – more of a vertical feeling than horizontal. Different materials, windows, details. The smaller size of the hotel also makes the number of on-site parking spaces more appropriate and hopefully represents less of a challenge to an already difficult parking situation.

WN: Will you still be going before the city’s planning board as scheduled on February 28? Same for the Common Council?

Hassett: We will be on the Planning Board agenda this Tuesday morning but I do not expect that the Board will vote on the item that morning. I think we will be mainly explaining the new design and hearing input/questions.

WN: Will there be anymore public meetings?

Hassett: We would be happy to do one more big public meeting. We will be talking to Forever Elmwood about that on Monday (February 27, 2006). We would like to see if there is support for the new design and we also want to honor the public’s request for another meeting. I am hopeful that meeting can take place the week of March 6th.

WN: Is Savarino considering Mr. Rocco Termini’s design/proposal? If no, do you (Savarino) support/oppose?

Hassett: We are hopeful that we can build the hotel as redesigned. We think it would be a great addition to the Elmwood Ave. area, a good way for out-of-towners to see what Buffalo offers and a big help to the businesses there.

WN: Are you considering more time for the community to make a judgment?

Hassett: As I mentioned above, we expect to have one more meeting to get public reaction to the new design, and I think the Planning Board may want an additional meeting to make their determination. We do however, have constraints that will limit the amount of extra time. We still think it is a great project for the City and Elmwood; and we still want it to be something that the community wants as well.

So far, the City of Buffalo’s City Planning Board is still scheduled to meet at 8:00 a.m. (Eastern) on February 28, 2006 followed by the Common Council meeting at 2:00 p.m. on the same day.

Images of the design are not yet available. “We are working on the renderings this weekend, but I will likely have some early in the week,” stated Hassett.
