Many Uses For Self Storage Units

Submitted by: Adrianna Notton

There are so many reasons why people need a self storage unit. Storage units are convenient when you have items that you may only need to use now and then. Other people simply have too much stuff and don’t know where else to put it in the house.

Self storage units are also great for that temporary move between homes. Many people may have to temporarily move into a smaller place before finalizing a home sale or when they are building their own home. The storage unit can keep their things safe until the are ready to move into their new homes.

College students also find storage units handy to keep their stuff safe while they are away for the summer. It’s a lot easier and probably cheaper for college students to store their stuff instead of spending the money moving it back home.

Contractors might also find great use for self storage units. It’s a great way to store all of their equipment and materials when in between jobs. Some contractors might consider several units across various parts of town to cut down on drive time and get their jobs done faster.

The are many amenities that storage places offer to their customers, and the prices will vary depending on the amenities and size of the unit that is needed.

Climate Controlled

Some items are just too valuable not to be stored in a climate controlled unit. Climate controlled units protect your possessions from heat and humidity, which can ruin just about anything. Climate controlled units will be more expensive than non-climate controlled units, so only store items in climate controlled units if you absolutely need to.

Access

Some storage units offer 24 hour access to the units while others are only open during normal business hours. Other units will have gate access, either 24 hours or during normal hours. Determine the times you will need your items to figure out what type of access you should choose.

Security

In addition to access gates, storage places may also have door access that is controlled with a keyed entry pad. This prevents people that don’t patronize the storage unit from entering. Security cameras may also be important to some people when choosing a storage unit.

Other Items

Choose storage units that offer the small things for free, like the use of dollies and furniture carts. Some places offer boxes, blankets, packing materials and more for the same prices as a normal store.

Business Office

It’s a good idea to choose a storage unit that gives you several options to pay your bill. Many places now offer you a chance to pay online, make a payment through a mail drop, or debit the monthly payment directly through a bank account.

Self Storage units are located in many places where you may live. Whatever your reasons for needing a storage unit, be sure to shop around, if you can, for the perfect unit that offers the amenities you need at the prices you can afford.

Building partially collapses in New York City’s Upper West Side

Building partially collapses in New York City’s Upper West Side

Thursday, July 14, 2005

A building being prepared for demolition collapsed this morning in New York‘s Upper West Side around 9 a.m. EDT. Five people are known to be injured from the accident, as well as one rescue worker who was injured in the aftermath. None of the injuries were life-threatening.

The building was a supermarket, which was being taken down to make room for a high-rise building, something that residents took issue with. The roof, front wall, and scaffolding all fell to the ground, as stated by Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scoppetta.

Soon after the incident at least 100 police and fire department personnel combed the wreckage for more victims, using search and rescue dogs to find people by scent. They quickly accounted for the twenty-five construction workers who were working on the supermarket. Most of the victims’ injuries were broken bones, including one person who broke all four extremities.

Subway lines 1, 2, and 3 have been closed or redirected in response, along with the M104 bus.

Police stop LGBT march in Istanbul for third consecutive year

Police stop LGBT march in Istanbul for third consecutive year

Wednesday, June 28, 2017

On Sunday, police stopped Istanbul Pride, a yearly LGBT march in Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul. Police officials reportedly used rubber and plastic bullets and sprayed tear gas to prevent the participants from parading, after the Istanbul Governor’s office ordered them on Saturday not to conduct the march, asserting security reasons. This marks the third consecutive year activists were banned from holding the rally.

The statement released by the governor’s office read, “no application that suits the methods was made to our governor’s office”, though the organisers of the march disagreed. Homosexuality has been legal in Turkey for almost a century, but the governor’s office reported “serious reactions against the march.” Activists found checkpoints and a large number of police near Istiklal Avenue.

The pride organisers reported 41 were arrested by the police. Far-right Alperen Hearths was amongst nationalist groups calling for prohibiting the parade. Last week, on June 19, Kür?at Mican of Alperen said, “We will not allow them to walk. Wherever they march, we’ll also go. We will close down that street and they will not be able to go there. If we want, our numbers can reach 200,000”.

In a statement by the organisers of the rally, on Sunday, they said, “Our security will be provided by recognising us in the constitution, by securing justice, by equality and freedom”. Turkish legislators have yet to enact laws shielding the LGBT community from hate speech and ensuring civil rights. In 2010, Selma Aliye Kavaf, then-Minister of Women and Family Affairs said, “I believe homosexuality is a biological disorder and this disease needs treatment.” ((tr))Turkish language: ?Ben e?cinselli?in biyolojik bir bozukluk, bir hastal?k oldu?una inan?yorum. Tedavi edilmesi gereken bir ?ey bence. After the unsuccessful attempt to conduct the parade, organisers released a statement on Sunday, saying, “We are not scared, we are here, we will not change[…] You are scared, you will change and you will get used to it.”

Istanbul Pride was first organised in 2003, attracting by varying reports from tens of thousands to possibly a hundred thousand people in 2014. That was the last actual march before it was blocked three times in the last three years. Last year, the organisers were not granted permission for Istanbul Pride after Istanbul faced militant attacks. The 2015 march was stopped as it was about to start, and police used water cannons and tear gas to disperse the protesters.

Playing With Luck With Your Lottery Merchant Account

Submitted by: Bailey Thompson

Feeling lucky today? With a lottery merchant account, the good fortune is a few steps closer to your doorstep.

Venturing into operating a lottery business seem ideally convenient, but when you go to a bank to apply for a merchant account to be able to get lottery bets through credit card payments, a different scenario comes in. Delving into the world of lottery is a good pale to start understanding the reasons why it’s close to anything but perfect.

To begin, lottery is a form of gambling. Each ticket has a unique number or symbol corresponding to a individual lot. These lots are subjected to a draw, either by a person or a machine, if your lot is the one drawn, then you hit the jackpot.

Early sightings

Lottery first surfaced approximately 200 years before Christ was born. Main purpose was to raise funds for constructing dams, houses, temples, and significant landmarks, ultimately the Great Wall of China, which is now part of the prestigious Wonders of the World list.

Leisure was the driving force of lottery existence in Europe during the Roman Empire. During this period, the elite were the only group of people who can participate in this game. What happens in the tea parties is that each arriving guest receives a ticket, with impeccable dinnerware as the prize pot.

Winning money became the main goal for the Dutch. Every participant had an average of four tickets with a probability of only one of those tickets hitting the prize money. The modern-day name of lottery came from their tongue, loterij, which came from lot meaning fate. It is interesting to note that their staatsloterij still exists and is considered as th e oldest existing lottery.

Transfigurations

There are many forms of lotteries. Organizers lure participants into offering prizes which are either money or goods. If all the tickets are not sold, the organizers have to come up with ways to get enough funds to fill the prize money or goods.

Another form is the 50-50 draw wherein the prize will be half of the revenue. This is to ensure that even if all of the tickets were not sold, a prize will still be awarded.

In order to gain more participants to join, a new form emerged. Instead of randomly giving tickets, this involves allowing the participants to choose the numbers that they feel will be drawn. This strategy is the one being adapted today.

High risk, high returns

Most of the lottery operations are run by the government. This is to ensure that the taxes go to the state. In some countries, they have made lottery a legal form of gambling. Casinos are now being established and run by the state.

The thought of winning on a slim chance has an enormous appeal. More often than not, the great anticipation and excitement is what makes lottery tick. Even if you have lots of tickets, the probability of getting drawn is still undetermined.

Since governments have the upper hand in running lotteries, this makes it harder for private operators to get into the zone. One of the levels they’re having a hard time is applying for merchant accounts. Banks already considered lottery as high risk because of its high chargebacks and tax complications, but with the government as the applicant, banks feel a little more secured.

Having a lottery merchant account enables you to accept payments for tickets using via credit cards. Accepting credit card payments is good for business since almost everyone has a credit card. Modern lottery and lottery websites makes the draw using the mark sense technology. Mark sense is an optical reader found within most computer scanners that captures visual information and translates the image into digital information the computer is capable of understanding and displaying. Incorporate mark sense and your merchant account’s payment gateway, you success as a lottery owner and operator is inevitable.

They say success is a combination of luck and your own work. But with a lottery merchant account, it’s not really about the winning, it’s about enjoying the ride.

Residents fear environmental hazard on site of partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York

">
Residents fear environmental hazard on site of partially collapsed building in Buffalo, New York

Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Buffalo, New York —Residents in Buffalo, New York fear that demolishing a nearly 200-year-old livery and stable which partially collapsed on Wednesday June 11, could cause an environmental hazard.

Wikinews has learned that according property records with the city, the stable was converted into a gasoline station and auto repair shop in 1950, and is designated as a body shop. During that time at least four fuel storage tanks were installed on the property. Two are listed as 550 square feet while the other two are 2,000 square feet. All of the tanks are designated as a TK4, which New York State says is used for “below ground horizontal bulk fuel storage.” The cost of installing a tank of that nature according to the state, at that time, included the tank itself, “excavation and backfill,” but did not include “the piping, ballast, or hold-down slab orring.”

Property reports give the tanks a ‘construction code’ of a “C – Average”, meaning the tanks were not designed to last for a significant period of time. That rating has residents concerned that the tanks could pose an environmental hazard if they are not properly taken care of.

Wikinews has not been able to determine if the tanks have been removed or if they were emptied when the gas station closed sometime in the 1980’s. Wikinews has also contacted the city of Buffalo for a comment regarding the tanks, but has yet to receive a response.

The building was scheduled for emergency demolition on Thursday June 12, but was stopped by police after residents raised concerns for the safety of those living around the building. According to New York law, since the city ordered the demolition, they are required to perform an ‘Environmental Impact Assessment’ or SEQR when a project or demolition has the possibility of posing an environmental hazard.

According to New York law, a SEQR should be performed “to incorporate the consideration of environmental factors into the existing planning, review and decision-making processes of state, regional and local government agencies at the earliest possible time. To accomplish this goal, SEQR requires that all agencies determine whether the actions they directly undertake, fund or approve may have a significant impact on the environment, and, if it is determined that the action may have a significant adverse impact, prepare or request an environmental impact statement.”

The law states, “SEQR requires the sponsoring or approving governmental body to identify and mitigate the significant environmental impacts of the activity it is proposing or permitting.” It also states that it is the duty of the governmental body in charge of a project to enforce the laws of the SEQR. It also states that agencies must give “appropriate weight with social and economic considerations” when undergoing major projects.

The law also allows citizens to enforce the regulation stating, “citizens or groups who can demonstrate that they may be harmed by this failure [SEQR], may take legal action against the agency” or governmental body behind such a project. The court system in New York has been known to “consistently” rule in favor of plaintiffs who file lawsuits against agencies who do not perform a SEQR.

Residents won a restraining order to stop demolition after State Supreme Court Justice Judge John. F. O’Donnell signed a temporary injunction. Residents are concerned demolition crews moved too fast, and are not doing enough to protect them and their surrounding properties. They are also concerned that the city did not consider all the options or risks before ordering the building to be demolished.

On June 15, Judge Jerome C. Gorski ruled that the city can resume demolition, but “on a limited basis” only to remove fallen rubble that landed on properties, and to remove any loose bricks or material from the building, but not below its truss line. Because of the risk of further collapse, the workers are ordered “to use only hand tools.” to remove the loose material and debris. Residents are attempting to save portions of the building’s side walls and its facade. The demolition crew began to remove some materials, as ordered by the court on Tuesday, June 17.

Judge Gorski also ordered that the plaintiffs present their case in front the State’s Supreme Court in Rochester. The hearing took place on Monday morning on June 16 at 10:00 a.m. (eastern time), and the case is currently “being discussed,” said an anonymous source close to the lawsuit to Wikinews.

Bob Freudenheim is the building’s owner who has housing violations against him for neglecting the building. Residents state that Freudenheim should be “100% responsible” for his actions, and many are afraid that once the building is demolished, Freudenheim’s charges of neglect will be abolished. According to WGRZ Channel 2 News, in the past three months, Freudenheim has received at least five housing code violations from the city. WGRZ states that the orders, which they obtained, were to fix the building “to a safe condition.”

Freudenheim gave the city permission to demolish the building on Thursday June 12 during an emergency Preservation Board meeting, because he would not be “rehabilitating the building anytime soon.” Freudenheim, along with his wife Nina, were part-owners of the Hotel Lenox at 140 North Street in Buffalo and were advocates to stop the Elmwood Village Hotel from being built on the corners of Forest and Elmwood Avenues in 2006 and 2007, which Wikinews extensively covered. They also financially supported a lawsuit in an attempt to stop the hotel from being built. Though it is not known exactly how long Freudenheim has owned the stable, Wikinews has learned that he was the owner while fighting to stop the hotel from being built.

Freudenheim has not released a statement, and Wikinews has not been able to contact him regarding the issue.

Funding for new Museum of Liverpool approved

Funding for new Museum of Liverpool approved

Monday, July 11, 2005

In Liverpool, England the North West Development Agency (NWDA) has approved funds of nearly £33 million (about $57.6 million U.S. dollars) for the construction of the Museum of Liverpool on Mann Island at the Pier Head — part of Liverpool’s UNESCO World Heritage Site waterfront. An additional £7.5 million (about 13.1 million U.S. dollars) has been allocated for the creation of a canal link across Mann Island, encompassing central docks, the Pier Head, and the Albert Dock.

The museum is to replace the current Museum of Liverpool Life. The future museum, which is presently a £65 million pound project, is to be the situated on the site of the failed “Fourth Grace” building. The “Three Graces” are: the Royal Liverpool Building, the Cunard Building; and the Port of Liverpool Building. The abortive Fourth Grace was a controversial building known as “The Cloud”, the brainchild of architect Will Alsop. It was cancelled in July 2004 after local opposition, rising costs and the belief that the design was unrealistic.

The future museum, which will be designed in the shape of an “X”, will feature 10,000 square metres of exhibition space on Liverpool’s cultural and social history, including present exhibits of the Museum of Liverpool Life.

The two projects are considered integral aspects of Liverpool’s successful bid in 2003 for the 2008 European Capital of Culture.

Canadian PM and Quebec premier announce plans for highway development in Montreal

Canadian PM and Quebec premier announce plans for highway development in Montreal

Monday, November 6, 2006

The PM and Quebec premier Jean Charest have announced a $1 billion highway development in Montreal. This project would be one of Canada’s largest ever public private partnerships. It will be a 35 kilometer (21.8 mile) four-lane toll road Highway 30 project, in Montreal.

“It opens up a new horizon in Quebec’s economic development,” Stephen Harper said in a speech in Lery, Quebec. “As prime minister of Canada I am very proud and welcome this latest example of the fruitful collaboration between our government and that of Quebec.”

“Since we formed the government of Canada, I have wanted to practice an open federalism, inspired by the spirit which gave birth to the Canadian confederation,” said Harper. “That includes respecting provincial jurisdictions and the sharing of responsibilities.”

“You know that open federalism is not a constitutional theory or an electoral slogan,” the prime minister added. “It’s a new approach that allows partners in the Canadian federation to work better together in the realization of projects.”

Completing the highway will allow through traffic to bypass Montreal, reducing traffic congestion and air pollution in the area.

“The announcement today speaks to the willingness of both governments to work together to better serve the interests of the population,” said Charest, who is expected to head into an election next year.

Bank of Canada Governor David Dodge and other public officials have endorsed agreements between governments and private companies to invest in roads and hospitals.

Wikinews interviews Ethan Zuckerman

">
Wikinews interviews Ethan Zuckerman

Wednesday, May 3, 2006

On Friday, April 28, Wikinews interviewed Ethan Zuckerman, the founder of Geekcorps, a non-profit organization that sending people with technical skills to developing countries for development projects. Ethan has also founded Global Voices Online and helped found Tripod.com, the free web-hosting company now owned by Lycos. He serves a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Tripod.

The interview was held publicly in a dedicated IRC channel.

 • What insipred you to get behind Geekcorps, and has there been a big Geekcorps mission, yet?

I got interested in Geekcorps because I’d lived in Ghana as a student in 1993 and 1994While over there, I was amazed at just how little internet connectivity was availableI did a bit of volunteer work helping wire an environmental organization, but basically the only people who had regular net access were US embassy employees. So I was fascinated to learn that my friends in Ghana were getting online in the late 1990s, and I wondered whether anyone would start building net-based businesses, as people were doing in the USMy wife and I went back to Ghana to visit friends and found that there was a huge deal of enthusiasm about the web and the potential it represented, but almost no expertisepeople were really desperate to learn, but very few people were able to teach at the same time, I was ready to step down from Tripod, and I knew a lot of burned out geeksI started wondering whether some of my friends would be interested in sharing their skills in the developing world and whether that would be a useful thing to dolots of international development folks seemed to think it was a good cause, so I started working on it fulltime. We ended up sending about 100 people overseas over the four years I was involved with the projectwe usually sent about 6-8 to a country at a time, working with a variety of businesses, NGOs and government agencies biggest projects were in Ghana, Mali, Mongolia, Senegal.

 • With Geekcorps you pushed the idea that newly tech-savvy citizens of developing countries could start online businesses to do digital work for the developed world. But from an American perspective, that’s outsourcing, the bane of US workers. How do you justify working towards a goal that might cost Americans their jobs?

Basically, I’m concerned about the ability of people all over the world to make a good living, send their children to school, build nice houses, have enough food and clean water, etc there’s clearly something of a tradeoff offered by all sorts of globalization – as millions of Chinese are lifted out of rural povery, industrial manufacturing jobs in the US disappear but the US has a pretty good history of innovating and creating new jobs in fields that require a lot of intellectual endeavor the US continues to found interesting software companies, pioneer new net services and generally do a lot of the interesting development on the cutting edge of tech I think a lot of routine coding jobs are up for outsourcing, but I don’t think that people who design software – or who manage the outsourcing and software development process – are going away any time soon it’s very hard to outsource creative activities – it’s somewhat easier to outsource repetitive processes.I think we need to worry less about individual job loss and more about the ability to continue creating new projects. at the same time, I’m very excited to see companies in the developing world moving up the value chain as well, starting to innovate and create new projects as well…

 • Lately you’ve been involved with projects including Global Voices and Worldchanging. Where and how do the two dovetail, and where and how do they differ? What are the strengths of each?

They’re very different projects and communities, WC is a magazine -it’s a chance for a small group of smart people to write original content on green issues it’s a lot less global than GV – perhaps overly focused on the US and Europe – and has a tight subject focus GV is an edited aggregator People are not so much writing original, opinionated content on GV as they are linking to other content indeed, we ask people to try very hard not to be especially opinionated on GV. Not NPOV, but a similar perspective – you point, you don’t advocate<ethanz> also GVO is huge – 10 regional editors, about 60 regular contributors, a network of about a thousand blogs we regularly link to the community has a very different feeling – much more international, more 24/7. both are fascinating projects, successes in their own ways, but quite different on the tech issues, a little – in both cases, we’re taking very simple weblog tools and asking them to support very large communities. And a little bit on the issue of how they interface with mainstream media in both cases, we’re interested in amplifying memes and getting them picked up by popular press as well as on the web.

 • Isn’t that a contradiction? you’re asking people to be “less” opinionated, but not asking them to be unopinionated?

Blogs are essentially about opinion, asking for NPOV in the blog space misses the point – we want to know what opinions people in Syria have but we want our middle east editor to try to fairly represent the different opinions taking place in that space that said, he’s got an opinion as well so asking for NPOV isn’t the right thing to do – asking him to point to a diversity of opinions is, in our case

Cash Back With Student Loan Debt Consolidation

By John Mailer

Student loan debt continues to rise each passing year, and college costs, including graduate school costs, have outpaced inflation while federal student loan interest rates are close to record lows. According to studies conducted by the National Center for Education Statistics, it is believed that approximately half of recent college graduates have student loans that, on an average, are in the range of $10,000. Along with such loans, the average cost of college is becoming twice as expensive as the rate of inflation.

Requirements Include Grace Period and Active Repayment of Debt

In order to be eligible for student loan debt consolidation, the student should no longer be enrolled in school and must be in the grace period of the loan. Or he should be in the process of actively repaying the loan, and the minimum loan amount required by most consolidation companies works out to $10,000 typically.

Through some student loan debt consolidation programs it is possible for the students to obtain cash back for consolidating their student loans. And, the bigger the balance is, the more money is returned. Also, interest rates can be low and not exceed 5.4 percent and there is also facility to obtain a one percent reduction after 48 consecutive on-time payments.

In addition, the better student loan debt consolidation programs do give a quarter percent interest rate reduction when the student uses his or her automated debit program to repay their loans. There may also be no fees or prepayment penalties as well as just one monthly payment to a single lender. As is the case with any other debt, student loan debt may have an impact (negative or positive) on the students credit as well influence future decisions. For example, a student that has a student loan debt in excess of 8 per cent of their income will have their credit seen negatively when being assessed for future loans.

In order for the student to take student loan debt consolidation, he or she should be in grace, repayment, deferment or default status and student loan debt consolidation would result in a 0.6 percent lower rate of interest in case the student is consolidating variable rate Stafford loans during their six month grace period.

The student should be careful before taking to student loan debt consolidation and it is advisable for them to consolidate at current interest rates and hope that the rates will go down in the future. For students that have taken consolidation during their grace periods, it will go into repayment once the consolidation gets finalized and will thus result in forfeiture of the grace period.
