Master The Art Of Persuasion For Your Essays

By Linda Correli

Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears was the begging of the greatest speech in the history of humanity. It was the speech that in Shakespeares Julius Caesar turned the Romans against Brutus and helped justice triumph. Neither actions, nor events could change the wheel of history. The fact is that Antonys speech was the sole force that made people change their mind.

That is what you have to achieve when writing a persuasive essay persuade your readers to adopt your point of view and take a particular action. As it proved to be in Julius Caesar, you need to go through thick and thin in order to prove your case and utilize logic and reason to show that your idea is more legitimate than another. But the result is worth the efforts.

So, be sure to master the art of persuasion that will come in handy while writing persuasive essays. Below you will find helpful tips that will make writing persuasive essays as easy as pie.

1. Choose Your Persuasive Essay Topic

Pick up the topic that interests you and raises certain feelings within you. It is also important that your persuasive essay topic deals with urgent matters, and interests people round you. Before getting down to writing a persuasive essay make sure you have enough relevant information for the essay.

A good persuasive essay topic could sound like:

1. Hate should not be tolerated;

2. The status of women in Islam is rather ambiguous;

3. Boxing should be banned because it promotes cruelty.

No matter which topic you will choose, you have to approach essay writing with full responsibility, seriousness, and accuracy.

2. Brainstorm and Define Your Point of View

Before writing an essay, brainstorm! It will help you come out with the conclusion for your persuasive essay topic and define your attitude on the matter youve chosen. You can try free writing, clustering or listinganything that will be effective and helpful for you.

After thorough consideration and brainstorming you must be able to express clearly and convincingly why you have chosen this particular position on the subject of your persuasive essay.

3. Test Your Thesis

Your thesis statement, that is your point of view, should be debatable. Otherwise, there will be nothing to prove and nobody to convince. The best way to check whether your thesis is right is to write down a thesis statement directly opposing your own. If you find that possible, you may be sure that the argument for your persuasive essay is right up the street.

4. Understand Another Point of View

Try to step in your antagonists shoes and figure out what makes them think different. It is the proven way to counter the opposite point of view, since you will be able to provide contrasting evidence or find mistakes and inconsistencies in the logic of the opposing argument.

5. Study the Prospective Audience.

Be sure to know who will be reading your essay, so that to know what to press on. Try to decide if your audience agrees with you, is neutral, or disagrees with your persuasive essay topic. This choice will help you incline people to your point of view.

6. Use a Pleasant and Reasonable Tone

Antony did not call Brutus names, nor did he accuse him of the Caesar death. Instead, he called Brutus an honourable man, what turned out to be a brilliant way to pull him down.

Follow the same strategy in your persuasive essays. Use a pleasant and reasonable tone and avoid referring to yourself or addressing your readers. Be careful not to fly into temper and mix up your emotional attachment with your beliefs. Set your emotions aside and analyze all aspects of the persuasive essay topic.

7. Examine Your Persuasive Essay Topic

You need to know your persuasive essay topic from cover to cover if you want to add credibility to your words and make the readers trust you. That goes without saying.

Thus, to be an adept of you persuasive essay topic, use as many legitimate sources as possible. In order to find reliable information, go to the library or interview people who are experts on your persuasive essay topic. Its also necessary to go beyond your own knowledge and experience.

8. Structure Your Persuasive Essay

Think over the structure of your essay. Make sure that your ideas are well-organized, clear, concise, and up-to-the-point. Try to design your essay by figuring out the order in which you will present your evidence.

Remember to consider your purpose, audience, and your topic while writing an essay. Do your best to give the readers the feeling that you are well-informed about the subject you are dwelling upon.

9. Provide Evidence for Your Arguments

Arguments must always use sound reasoning and solid evidence. Otherwise, you will not establish credibility of your case and lose your readers support. Therefore, make sure to use the following evidence for your arguments:

1. facts that come from your reading, observation, or personal experience;

2. statistics that come from responsible sources;

3. quotes from leading experts that support your point of view;

4. examples that will make your ideas concrete and be a proof of your ideas.

No matter which one you will choose to use, make sure the evidence is reliable and comes from original sources.

10. Present a Strong Conclusion in Your Persuasive Essay

Conclusion has the profound impact on the reader. A good conclusion brings the persuasive essay to the satisfying end when your readers hold the same point of view and are ready to defend your statements.

As you close your persuasive essay, clearly redefine the topic and restate the most compelling evidence cited in original form. You should keep in mind that this is the last chance to remind the readers and convince them to accept your position.

Antonys way to conclude the speech was to mention his devoted love to dead Caesar. It was the last stroke in his immortal speech that made Romans take drastic action against the conspirators. Use something as strong as that.

Crossing guard killed by truck in Glasgow, Scotland

Crossing guard killed by truck in Glasgow, Scotland

Friday, January 15, 2010

An elderly woman who was a crossing guard or a “lollipop lady” has been killed in an accident involving a truck in Glasgow, Scotland. The woman has been identified as 59-year-old Catherine Gibson, who came from the Dennistoun district of Glasgow. At around 0850 GMT on Thursday, Gibson was assisting children in crossing a road as part of her job near St. Anne’s Primary School, located in the east side of the city. Gibson was suddenly struck by a truck and dragged underneath the wheels of the vehicle. The children being assisted witnessed the entire collision.

After the accident occurred, Gibson was transported to a hospital but died shortly afterwards. The truck driver, who is aged 64, was not injured in the crash. The vehicle itself was taken away from the scene of the accident at approximately 1200 GMT on the same day. A person working in a garage near where the accident occurred said: “There were children waiting to cross the road and they were all screaming and crying. They all ran back from where the accident had happened. She was found face down and it looked as though the lorry had driven over her shoulder. She was alive when she was found but died a short time later. It was horrific and the kids will probably need counselling.

“It could have been a case of the driver not being able to see her because the vehicle is quite high as he caught her on the passenger side. It’s not clear whether she gave him enough time to stop or whether the driver has failed to stop. It was snowing as well so that could have been a factor.”

Louise Jarvie is the head teacher of St. Anne’s Primary School. “Our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this very sad time,” she said in reference to the incident. “Support and counselling for pupils and staff will be available to anyone who needs it.”

Pakistan: 38 Talibani insurgents killed in two separate attacks in Orakzai area

Sunday, April 4, 2010

Pakistani security forces, aided by artillery and tanks killed 38 Taliban insurgents today in two separate attacks near the Afghanistan border in the Orakzai district of the North-West Frontier Province of the country, according to government officials.

Security men say that Orakzai, located to the southwest of Peshawar, became a Taliban stronghold since the army led offensives against other Taliban areas in different parts of northwest Pakistan.

An army checkpoint in Sayd Khalil Baba village was attacked by militants early on Sunday. However, security troops killed 26 insurgents with artillery fire, according to Samiullah Khan, a senior administrative official in the area. Sajid Khan, another government official of Orakzai told the Reuters news agency that scores of militants attacked the checkpost in the village on Sunday morning. “They used rocket-propelled grenades, mortars and machine guns, but our soldiers’ response was quick and tough,” he added. Ten militants were wounded in this attack according to the latter, who is based in Kalaya, the district’s principal town.

Within hours, a military convoy was ambushed by Taliban attackers in an adjoining village. At least a dozen insurgents were killed in this attack, according to local authorities. Officials said only Pakistani soldier was injured in the attack. There was no confirmation of the figures provided by administrative officials available news agencies, as journalists are prohibited from entering the area.

Security officials claimed around 250 militants have been killed in several clashes in the Orakzai district. Pakistani Taliban leader {{w|Hakimullah Mehsud]] was believed to have control over this region. The latter is thought to have been killed in an U.S. drone strike in January this year.

Water damage can be caused by a number of factors including flooding, not turning off a faucet when leaving the house or office, a broken water pipe and many others. When such a scenario occurs, it is advisable to turn to a professional Water Removal Oahu professional services firm. Below are a few things that such a professional can do to save your business and home.

Fast Response

A professional Water Removal Oahu services firm will respond to your distress call in a matter of minutes. This is important since the longer you let the water stay in your premise, the more damage you are likely to sustain. Water that stays put longer than 24 hours, increases the risk of the growth of mildew and mold tremendously. Mold contamination can lead to a number of health conditions. Furthermore, the floors, walls and other fixtures are likely to start decaying if they are allowed to stand in or are saturated by water.

Overall Objective of Water Removal Services in Oahu

Water removal services include the physical removal of stagnant water, extraction of water from the walls and extraction of water from carpets as well as other surfaces affected.

Factors Affecting Water Removal Services

Water Removal Oahu services are likely to be affected by the size of damage (in terms of the affected area’s coverage), length of time the water has been standing in your premise, type of materials contaminated by the water as well as whether the water is ‘dirty’ or ‘clean’. ‘Dirty’ water means that it contains viruses, bacteria and other microorganisms from areas such as the sewage system.

Costs

If the water has been allowed to stay too long in the premise, it is more than likely that getting it out will cost you more. This is because the length of time allows water to become more saturated in both porous and non-porous materials. In effect, the remediation of moisture becomes more complicated.

How to Find Water Removal Services

Former Scottish Conservatives leader Annabel Goldie to stand down as MSP

Former Scottish Conservatives leader Annabel Goldie to stand down as MSP

Friday, June 26, 2015

Annabel Goldie, Scottish Conservative Party leader from 2005 to 2011, has announced she will stand down as an MSP at the next elections in 2016. Goldie, who has been an MSP for the West Scotland (previously West of Scotland) electoral region since the Scottish Parliament’s formation in 1999, said she intends to focus on her role in the House of Lords, where she has been a peer since 2013.

In a statement today, Goldie said leading the party was an “enormous honour” for her. She also said: “It has afforded me both satisfaction and pleasure to serve my constituents and to serve the parliament and I will look back with great happiness at my time as an MSP. I am grateful to friends and colleagues from all parties for their support. Sometimes we found common ground, sometimes we disagreed but never I hope with rancour nor disrespect. Politics is a rough trade but we have built a strong parliament in Scotland of which we can all be rightly proud.” She said because of Ruth Davidson, her successor as Scottish Conservative leader, the party is now “in fine fettle and stands a great chance of making real progress in the years ahead,” concluding by saying: “I look forward to continuing to work as part of that effort in the House of Lords in the years to come.”

Davidson responded to the news by calling Goldie an “unstoppable force”, adding: “She has been an inspiration to a whole generation of Scottish Conservatives, and she has been a tremendous mentor, support and friend to me. In Holyrood, she has fostered both affection and respect from all members – regardless of their political affiliation – and her retirement from the Scottish Parliament will leave an Annabel-sized hole which won’t ever quite be filled. She is unique.” Meanwhile, David Cameron, UK Conservative leader and UK Prime Minister, said: “Annabel is one of those rare breeds in Scottish politics, somebody known by her first name alone. When she was Scottish Conservative leader, I valued her sage advice. She has been a towering strength to our party in Scotland, a doughty debater in the TV studios and Scottish Parliament and has one of the sharpest wits around. I wish her a long and happy retirement after 17 years unstinting service at Holyrood – but look forward to seeing her on the red benches of the Lords for years to come.”

In Holyrood, she has fostered both affection and respect from all members – regardless of their political affiliation – and her retirement from the Scottish Parliament will leave an Annabel-sized hole which won’t ever quite be filled. She is unique.

Goldie, the Scottish Conservatives’ first ever female leader, was elected unopposed. She took up the role in the aftermath of David McLetchie’s resignation from the role in an expenses usage controversy and subsequent resignation of Brian Monteith from his Conservative whip role in the Scottish Parliament for briefing the media against him. Meanwhile, as Scottish Conservatives won 18 seats in the Scottish Parliament in 1999 and 2003, the party had been less successful in UK general elections in Scotland; Conservatives went up from zero out of a possible 72 UK MPs in Scotland in 1997 to one in 2001. This led to Goldie remarking in her inaugural speech in 2005 that: “The wheels are back on the wagon – and I’m the nag hitched up to tow it.” She also said: “The party is still way ahead of where it was in 1997. And my first task is to take it forward to 2007.” However, under Goldie’s leadership, the number of seats the Scottish Conservatives won in the Scottish Parliament slightly decreased from 18 in 2003 to 17 in 2007 and to 15 in 2011. At the same time, the number of Conservative MPs stood at one out of a possible 59 after the 2010 UK general election.

In the aforementioned 2005 speech, she also said the party could be trusted with devolution in Scotland, adding: “making devolution work better means real devolution: not the lumbering and cripplingly expensive array of government departments, government advisers, consultants, quangos, quasi-quangos and agencies with all their expensive appendages, but devolving down to people and their communities, their right to make their own decisions about their lives, how for example they procure healthcare and how they educate their children.” Goldie would go on to sit on the advisory board for the Smith Commission, which was set up to examine which further political powers should be devolved to Scotland following the 2014 Scottish independence referendum. More recently, Goldie supported a reduction in the voting age for Scottish Parliament elections from 18 to 16 in a vote earlier this month, commenting: “I think it is an opportunity for them to continue their high level of engagement in topical affairs that we saw with the independence referendum.”

Goldie, a member of the Salvation Army’s West of Scotland Advisory Board and a Church of Scotland elder, is not the only Scottish Conservative MSP intending to stand down in 2016. Mary Scanlon, Gavin Brown, Alex Fergusson and Nanette Milne all reportedly intend to leave the Scottish Parliament next year.

Belgian prime minister offers resignation

">
Belgian prime minister offers resignation

Thursday, April 22, 2010

Belgian prime minister Yves Leterme has offered to resign amid a political dispute, the press office of the Belgian parliament reported on Thursday.

The Belgian king, King Albert II, has not yet accepted the prime minister’s offer. He and Leterme met on Thursday’s afternoon, the office said. The king said that the resulting political turbulence from the resignation “seriously threatens” the country’s standing in the European Union.

“[He] had no other choice than to inform us that he would go to the king immediately to tender the government’s resignation,” said Belgium’s health minister, Laurette Onkelinx.

The Belgian palace commented on the issue in a written statement. “The king and the prime minister jointly underlined that […] a political crisis would be inopportune and would seriously damage both the economic and social well-being of the citizens and the role of Belgium in Europe.”

Leterme also resigned as prime minister in late 2008 over a banking scandal. He returned to office last November when former PM Herman van Rompuy gave up the post to become the first, full-time head of the European Union.

This latest resignation is a fallout of Belgium’s long-term power struggle between the country’s French-speaking Walloons and Flemish-speaking majority.

The latest disagreement centers on special rights for Walloons living near Brussels; specifically, the location of electoral boundaries around the capital. A key coalition member, the Flemish liberal Open VLD Party, pulled out of the government, frustrated over the failure to resolve the dispute. Party chairman Alexander De Croo said that”[w]e have not agreed on a negotiated solution and therefore Open VLD no longer has confidence in the government.”

Without the VLD, the other four government parties have 76 of 150 lower house seats in the parliament, although governing with such a small majority would be hard, Al Jazeera says.

Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

">
Ingrid Newkirk, co-founder of PETA, on animal rights and the film about her life

Tuesday, November 20, 2007

Last night HBO premiered I Am An Animal: The Story of Ingrid Newkirk and PETA. Since its inception, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has made headlines and raised eyebrows. They are almost single-handedly responsible for the movement against animal testing and their efforts have raised the suffering animals experience in a broad spectrum of consumer goods production and food processing into a cause célèbre.

PETA first made headlines in the Silver Spring monkeys case, when Alex Pacheco, then a student at George Washington University, volunteered at a lab run by Edward Taub, who was testing neuroplasticity on live monkeys. Taub had cut sensory ganglia that supplied nerves to the monkeys’ fingers, hands, arms, legs; with some of the monkeys, he had severed the entire spinal column. He then tried to force the monkeys to use their limbs by exposing them to persistent electric shock, prolonged physical restraint of an intact arm or leg, and by withholding food. With footage obtained by Pacheco, Taub was convicted of six counts of animal cruelty—largely as a result of the monkeys’ reported living conditions—making them “the most famous lab animals in history,” according to psychiatrist Norman Doidge. Taub’s conviction was later overturned on appeal and the monkeys were eventually euthanized.

PETA was born.

In the subsequent decades they ran the Stop Huntingdon Animal Cruelty against Europe’s largest animal-testing facility (footage showed staff punching beagle puppies in the face, shouting at them, and simulating sex acts while taking blood samples); against Covance, the United State’s largest importer of primates for laboratory research (evidence was found that they were dissecting monkeys at its Vienna, Virginia laboratory while the animals were still alive); against General Motors for using live animals in crash tests; against L’Oreal for testing cosmetics on animals; against the use of fur for fashion and fur farms; against Smithfield Foods for torturing Butterball turkeys; and against fast food chains, most recently against KFC through the launch of their website kentuckyfriedcruelty.com.

They have launched campaigns and engaged in stunts that are designed for media attention. In 1996, PETA activists famously threw a dead raccoon onto the table of Anna Wintour, the fur supporting editor-in-chief of Vogue, while she was dining at the Four Seasons in New York, and left bloody paw prints and the words “Fur Hag” on the steps of her home. They ran a campaign entitled Holocaust on your Plate that consisted of eight 60-square-foot panels, each juxtaposing images of the Holocaust with images of factory farming. Photographs of concentration camp inmates in wooden bunks were shown next to photographs of caged chickens, and piled bodies of Holocaust victims next to a pile of pig carcasses. In 2003 in Jerusalem, after a donkey was loaded with explosives and blown up in a terrorist attack, Newkirk sent a letter to then-PLO leader Yasser Arafat to keep animals out of the conflict. As the film shows, they also took over Jean-Paul Gaultier‘s Paris boutique and smeared blood on the windows to protest his use of fur in his clothing.

The group’s tactics have been criticized. Co-founder Pacheco, who is no longer with PETA, called them “stupid human tricks.” Some feminists criticize their campaigns featuring the Lettuce Ladies and “I’d Rather Go Naked Than Wear Fur” ads as objectifying women. Of their Holocaust on a Plate campaign, Anti-Defamation League Chairman Abraham Foxman said “The effort by PETA to compare the deliberate systematic murder of millions of Jews to the issue of animal rights is abhorrent.” (Newkirk later issued an apology for any hurt it caused). Perhaps most controversial amongst politicians, the public and even other animal rights organizations is PETA’s refusal to condemn the actions of the Animal Liberation Front, which in January 2005 was named as a terrorist threat by the United States Department of Homeland Security.

David Shankbone attended the pre-release screening of I Am An Animal at HBO’s offices in New York City on November 12, and the following day he sat down with Ingrid Newkirk to discuss her perspectives on PETA, animal rights, her responses to criticism lodged against her and to discuss her on-going life’s work to raise human awareness of animal suffering. Below is her interview.

New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

">
New Jersey to consider bikini waxing ban

Friday, March 20, 2009

New Jersey is considering a state-wide ban on Brazilian waxes, the removal of hair from the bikini area.

Although genital waxing has never really been allowed in the state, the New Jersey Board of Cosmetology and Hairstyling plans to propose a ban with more specific legal wording, in response to two women who reported being injured during a wax. The board will consider the proposal at their next meeting on April 14.

If the measure passes, New Jersey may become the only US state to ban the practice outright.

Although millions of Americans engage in bikini waxes, which generally cost between $50 and $60 per session, the practice comes with risks. Skin care experts say the hot wax can irritate delicate skin in the bikini area, and result in infections, ingrown hairs and rashes.

Waxing on the face, neck, abdomen, legs and arms would continue to be permitted in the state under the proposed ban. Although New Jersey statutes have always banned bikini waxing, the laws were unclear and seldom enforced.

As a result, many salons from around the state have offered bikini waxing for years. Many salon owners spoke out against the proposed ban, which they said would severely damage their business.

“I really don’t know if the state can stop it at this point,” said Valentia Chistova, owner of the Monmouth County salon Brazil. “I know a lot of women who are really hooked.”
