Culture of creativity features at Furnal Equinox 2018

Sunday, March 25, 2018

Visual art, fabric art, photography, performance, dance, virtual reality, and music were all the subject of sessions at Furnal Equinox 2018, a conference held from March 16 to 18 at Toronto’s Westin Harbour Castle. Canada’s largest furry convention by attendance, the annual event offers dozens of subculture-specific programs.

The convention’s communications and public relations coordinator for the event, Ronnie, describes furries as “people that enjoy arts and culture centred around animals and animal-themed topics, essentially. Furnal Equinox in particular, we like to celebrate in a very visual and very […] artistic nature, where we have lots of arts and performances and crafts that go on, and people celebrate with lots of socialisation involved.”

Of the attendees, Ronnie told Wikinews “they come from all walks of life. They are people of all ages, sizes, all sorts of backgrounds, and they come together under one mutual interest, which is their love for animal culture.”

“Programming at Furnal Equinox involves[…] a lot of informational panels, so you can find out about topics from art and how to draw, or how to visually incorporate different elements into your artworks. You can also find panels that teach you how to write better, be a better fiction author for example,” explained the event representative.

At one panel Wikinews attended, members of its all-volunteer organising committee spoke of the year-long process of planning the event, and their reasons for committing such a significant amount of their time. Said one panelist, “if you’re happy, we’re happy.”

The largest hub of activity at the convention was a dealer’s room; nicknamed the “Dealer’s Den”, giving it an anthropomorphic twist. Vendors were selling original visual art, wearables like faux fur tails or ears, or things like jewellery or soap with motifs that would interest attendees.

The back area of the room was dedicated to a charity auction, with proceeds benefiting Happily Ever Esther Farm Sanctuary. According to the convention website, the charity is “dedicated to rescuing abused, neglected, and abandoned farmed animals. Their goal is to provide a safe, life-long home for all of their residents, and to educate the public about the true nature of farmed animals through tours, volunteer programs, and community outreach.”

Split into groups, some attendees played “Fursuit Games” in front of an audience, like trying to toss a ball into a garbage can. The activity made harder, of course, by the limited dexterity and vision the most of the costumes entail.

Community Television consortium urges Australian government to increase funding for channels

Tuesday, March 10, 2009

The Community Broadcasting Association of Australia (CBAA) has urged the Australian government to increase funding for community broadcasters. CBAA is asking for an extra $AU14 million for “vital community broadcasting services.”

According to CBAA President Deborah Welch, community television is the training ground for the Australian media industry.

“It is the launching pad for the career of thousands of Australian musicians. It is an incredible source of local news, music and culture targeted specifically to local communities and produced by members of the community themselves,” Ms Welch said in a statement.

Stations broadcast a range of programs from religious programing, to car shows and sporting events. Several state based sporting leagues broadcast on community television stations. C31 Melbourne broadcasts an association football show called The Victoria Football Show; Queensland Community Television broadcasts AFL Queensland State League matches; and C31 Adelaide broadcasts Indoor Cricket & Netball and South Australian National Football League matches.

According to the CBAA, the primary income sources for community television stations are sponsorship announcements and community donations.

“The CBBA is calling on the Federal Government to commit $14 million in new funding for content production, infrastructure, training and sector co-ordination and planning,” Ms Walch says. “With $10.4 billion being spent on ‘strengthening the economy’ this is highly targeted $14 million will assist in skills development and employment pathways for many volunteers involved in local stations as well as strengthening local communities ability to sustain themselves in tough times.”

Australian Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlum says, “[The] government should always be looking at ways to bring communities together, through sharing information and building partnerships.”

2007 Brooklyn Book Festival showcases borough’s continued literary tradition

2007 Brooklyn Book Festival showcases borough’s continued literary tradition

Thursday, September 20, 2007

Wikimedia Commons has media about 2007 Brooklyn Book Festival.

Brooklyn Borough Hall featured a Who’s Who in New York’s literary community during the second annual Brooklyn Book Festival. According to Brooklyn Borough President Marty Markowitz, the borough’s zip code 11215 boasts more authors than anywhere else in the country. It appeared to be the case on Sunday. More than 100 authors were featured at the day-long event, including The Basketball Diaries writer Jim Carroll, former M*A*S*H star Mike Farrell, author and illustrator Mo Willems, Jack Kerouac‘s sometime lover and National Book Critics Circle Award recipient Joyce Johnson and PEN American Center President Francine Prose.

This year’s festival made use of Saint Francis College and the Brooklyn Historical Society to accommodate the big jump over last year’s 70 authors in participation to 115 this year. Although there is no official way to keep track of the numbers of attendees, Borough Hall officials estimated between 15,000 and 20,000 people attended.

Markowitz spoke with NY1‘s Inside City Hall host Dominic Carter, who shared stories of his childhood abuse. A lone protester from Develop Don’t Destroy, the group against the development of Brooklyn’s Atlantic Yards, held up a sign decrying Markowitz’s support for the project.

A highlight of the festival was recent Heinz Family Foundation award recipient Dave Eggers discussing with Nigerian poet Chris Abani a slide show of Eggers’s trip to Marial Bai, Sudan. Eggers wrote a fictional account of the life of Valentino Achak Deng, one of the Lost Boys of Sudan. The book, What Is the What, was a critical success.

One of the featured panels on “soon-to-be-published works of groundbreaking authors” that included Jim Carroll, The Women of Brewster Place author Gloria Naylor and playwright and music journalist Joe Meno, ran into problems. The panel was the final program and started half an hour late. Naylor failed to show, reportedly due to a death in the family. In the middle of Carroll’s presentation he was asked to stop speaking so they could close the courtroom where the event was held in the Borough Hall. Carroll was visibly upset. He asked the audience if they wanted to hear one song, to which they enthusiastically cheered until the festival organizers cut off his microphone to keep to a schedule that required they vacate the premises by a certain time.

Steven Carter and Bernice McFadden also failed to attend; McFadden stated on her blog that she came down with a stomach illness. The Brooklyn Book Festival had no comment.

Real Estate Investment Power}

Real Estate Investment Power

by

Corobo

I would like to show you how powerful investing in Real Estate can be. This is the main reason why we have lots of Real Estate Investors all over the world. Suppose someone gave you $10,000 to invest. What would you do with it?

Put the money in the bank? If you earned 5% interest, your investment would be worth about close to $12,800.00 after five years. Not bad, but with the current rate of inflation of 3% per year, your investment may not make you much in the long run after you pay Federal income taxes. In other words, you are barely keeping up with inflation. What about investing your $10,000 in the stock market? A good mutual fund can earn 10% to 15% a year. Also not bad, but not all mutual funds will earn that amount. Some go up and down just like stocks do.Maybe you can get a much higher rate of return by buying stocks, but which stock do you choose? Even stock analysts can’t agree on which stock will increase in value, and guessing proves nearly as accurate as relying on the advice of stock experts.Stocks values can go up tremendously, but many more go down or increase slowly. Although you can make money in the stock market, even the best information can’t guarantee a profit. Do you really want to throw your future on something as unpredictable as the stock market? What about starting a traditional brick and mortal type business? Your $10,000 may not even get you started. Maybe a restaurant? Only about 10% of new restaurant nationwide ever make it. Think about this, if you invest $10,000 in the stock market, a bank account, or a business, what do you have? A $10,000 investment. But look at what happens if you invest $10,000 in real estate. Even with a loan and a down payment of $10,000, you can purchase a $100,000 property. So your $10,000 investment is actually worth $100,000.Where else can you buy a $100,000 investment for a fraction of its actual value? And unlike any other investment, you can buy all types of real estate without using any of your own money. Imagine the type of return that you can get.

‘Net Neutrality Amendment’ fails in U.S. House

‘Net Neutrality Amendment’ fails in U.S. House

Saturday, June 10, 2006

On Thursday, Congress turned down the “Net Neutrality Amendment” to the Communications Opportunity, Promotion, and Enhancement Act (COPE Act) 269-152.

The COPE Act is designed to make it easier for telecommunications companies to offer cable TV service and strengthen competition. Proponents hope it would lower the price of high-speed Internet for consumer by enabling Internet service providers to bundle phone, data, video and mobile phone services. The act is the first major telecommunications bill to come before Congress in over a decade, and it passed by 321-101 vote on Thursday.

Portions of the “Net Neutrality” amendment to the COPE Act sought to assure that communication companies who provide Internet services treated all data delivery passing through their connections equally. It specified that each broadband provider has the duty “not to block, impair, degrade, discriminate against, or interfere with the ability of any person to use a broadband connection to access, use, send, receive, or offer lawful content, applications, or services over the Internet.” The amendment’s passage would have prevented AT&T, Verizon, Comcast and other broadband providers from charging content providers like Google, Yahoo, Amazon or eBay for priority access to their networks. Democrats were largely in favour of the legislation with 140 Ayes and 58 Noes, whereas only 11 Republicans voted for the measure, with 211 against.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi argued that “The imposition of additional fees for Internet content providers would unduly burden Web-based small businesses and start-ups,” and that “They would also hamper communications by noncommercial users, those using religious speech, promoting civic involvement and exercising First Amendment freedoms.”

The phone companies and their Congressional allies argued that the restrictions in the amendment would discourage investment in upgrading networks. Chief technology officer for BellSouth William L. Smith told the Washington Post that telephone companies should be able to charge companies for having their content load faster than that of competitors. “If I go to the airport, I can buy a coach standby ticket or a first-class ticket,” Smith said. “In the shipping business, I can get two-day air or six-day ground.”

The legislation has been subject to intense lobbying by telecommunication companies on one side, and content providers on the other. The bill is due to be discussed next in the Senate, where lobbying efforts from both sides are expected to intensify. The White House said that it supports the current bill.

When Looking To Buy A Sport Bike

byAlma Abell

One of the best things about living in a place like Tucson, Arizona is the varying topography around the city. While Tucson is a big city, it is surrounded by a bigger desert; if you drive 15 minutes in any direction out of the city, you are going to find yourself in the middle of the desert, which is great for sport biking. Tucson is known for being a Mecca for sports bikers, as there are hundreds of trails within a 40 mile radius or so.

People come to Tucson for a week with their bikes and just drive trails that vary from beginners to advanced riding. When you live in Tucson, you get the added benefit of doing this all of the time. If you are new to the area, or are just looking for the latest in Sport Bike options, you need to look for a dealer who is going to be able to get you what you are looking for.

Searching for the right Sport Bike is kind of like searching for a sports car: it’s not just about looks, it is also about performance. As much as you might want to buy a bike that looks great when it is in the garage and out on the trail, you also want to make sure that it gives you the performance that you are looking for as well.

In addition, you also want to make sure that you get a bike that is not going to cost you an arm and a leg to keep on the road, so to say. If you need to replace a part, you shouldn’t have to pay a premium for it, especially if you are going to need to take it to a mechanic.

When you are looking for a high quality Sport Bike, whether it be of the new or used variety, you want to find a lot that you feel you can trust. As you do your search, one option that you need to consider is going to be Musselman Honda. You can find more info on what they have on the lot at Musselmanhonda.com.
